Hello All;

Just wanted to share the story of my first buck with a bow. Been gun hunting for many years, and have always been intrigued with the bow. Last year I decided to get into it and had a lot of fun over the year getting proficient with it. The other morning, I headed out to the stand over a food plot (1 acre split between mixed clovers and brassica) at around 5:30. Crept in as quietly as possible and got set up. Around 6am, it was just starting to get light and the birds etc were waking up - it was a beautiful morning to be out. At about 6:15, I heard some rustling in the long grass on the north side of the plot and out walked the biggest buck I've seen in person. He came into the plot at about 70yds away - much to far away for me to be comfortable in taking a shot. I remember thinking "There's no way he's going to get close enough, but it was great just to see an amazing buck like that". He messed around with the clover for a little bit, and then started coming towards the brassica, which fortunately was closer to the stand. I tried not to go crazy as he sllllooooowwwwwllllyyy made his way closer. When he got about 35yds away, he turned and gave me a decent broadside view and I let 'er rip. He jumped, ran about 150yds and stood there for about 15 seconds and then went down. I was fortunate to have given him a double lung/heart shot and he expired quickly. I have an untrained eye, but he looks like a 6x7 and he was 290lbs. I have had a lot of fun with the gun hunt and I'm still looking very forward to the gun season here, but there's something very intimate about taking a deer with the bow. The excitement waiting for him to get in a range I was comfortable with was incredible and something I'll never forget. I couldn't have asked for a better hunt and just wanted to share a bit of my excitement. Best of luck to you all in your hunts this year. Jim.

HOLY SNAPPIN' *RSEHOLES!!!!!!!!!! I'm new to bow hunting too - just too my first deer (doe) a few weeks ago, so when I read "My first buck with a bow" as your thread title I was casual reading your post and expecting a pic of a nice little naive meat buck, maybe a spikehorn, at the end..... Guess not! Thanks for the story and pics - to say that he's a great deer is an understatement! One complaint though - you set the bar a little high for the rest of us, don't you think??? Do you mean to tell me that I have to match THAT? Congrats on preparing yourself and for waiting for the right shot - made for a perfect harvest of a great deer.
Cheers,

X2 Beautiful Buck you have taken. Congrats !! Are you going to have it mounted ?

I feel real sorry for you. Why? Well how are you EVER gonna top that one. Geez. I remember my first archery deer years ago. I would of had a stroke seeeing one that big. Congratulations.

Thanks everyone. I am going to get a shoulder/head mount done on this guy. I know that every time I look at him down in the "man cave", I'll remember that awesome morning. The really neat thing was that when my 2 boys (9 and 7) saw the buck, the each spent an hour shooting stuffed animals against the target so that they're ready to get their own deer in the future. I can't wait for that.

I realize that it's going to be very, very tough to beat this buck in the future, but I'm sure going to try;)
