Not quite as nice as Bac's, but that's my first. (you guessed it, with a sportered #4)

Story:

Was out hunting with a buddy from work and his BIL, the mission for the day was to get me my first deer. So they set me up at the top of a gully accross from some trees and pushed the bush for me. After awhile I heard something moving in the trees and saw some deer coming down the other side of the gully in the trees. Two of them came up on my side about the same time, this guy (which I thought was a small doe) and another doe. The other one took off away from me, but this one stopped for a second so I took a shot. I thought I missed as he bolted out of sight. Then a buck came up over the rise running (spooked by my shot I suppose). I took a shot at him and that one I did miss. Thinking I had missed both, I radioed back and said "I think I missed" then I saw a MASSIVE blood trail (this from about 75-100 yards) and said "uh, no, I got one". I waited till everybody came closer then we looked for it. It had gone maybe 40 yards down a ridge, just out of sight, with a bullet through both lungs, and dropped.

Lessons learned:

- All that range time paid off
- You don't need to lead a moving target at 100 yards (I led the buck about a foot)
- The bucks come out last

All in all, I'm happy with this one. If nothing else he'll be mighty tasty :D

did you wipe the milk off its lips for that picture?just kidding.but seriously thats a nice little deer.should be some very fine eating.not matter how big of deer you get you always remember your first.with that kind of shooting did you fallow the other bucks tracks to look for blood?

What ya mean not as nice as my deer??? Looks like it's your first deer too and in my book, I would have been just as thrilled if I would have got a doe like yours :D

What a rush huh? I'm still floatin'!

I'm going back out tomorrow hoping my buddies get a deer also. For lunch, I am treating them to tenderloins and eggs! It's the least I could do for my hunting partners.

I'm sure these deer of ours will be the best tasting venison we ever tasted!

Congratulations! BTW....I got a #4 also....but I am saving it for my first moose! lolol :dancingbanana: :dancingbanana: :dancingbanana:

Take care

To answer some questions, we did follow the buck's tracks but found no blood or hair or any other sign he'd been hit. The ammo I used was Winchester Super X 180 gr, b/c that's all I could find anywhere :( Oh well, it did the job and shoots pretty consistently

Thanks for that, I'm alwayds interested and autopsy work on deer is underated. Without it we often hope that the round did the job in the way it was designed rather than by luck.
I think that you will have to shoot hundreds of deer with one particular rifle and calibre combo to prove anything technically but it is great fun trying!

Biggest blood trail I have seen in years.

Mattpiloto had just a great shot.

I think it was just as memorable for me being there getting his first. Something I will never forget.

Some hunters give us all bad reps, but from the sounds of all the new hunters this year, we are being surrounded by quality people. Great to hear all your success stories, and I can't wait to hear future stories from you all.
