Not quite as nice as Bac's, but that's my first. (you guessed it, with a sportered #4)
Story:
Was out hunting with a buddy from work and his BIL, the mission for the day was to get me my first deer. So they set me up at the top of a gully accross from some trees and pushed the bush for me. After awhile I heard something moving in the trees and saw some deer coming down the other side of the gully in the trees. Two of them came up on my side about the same time, this guy (which I thought was a small doe) and another doe. The other one took off away from me, but this one stopped for a second so I took a shot. I thought I missed as he bolted out of sight. Then a buck came up over the rise running (spooked by my shot I suppose). I took a shot at him and that one I did miss. Thinking I had missed both, I radioed back and said "I think I missed" then I saw a MASSIVE blood trail (this from about 75-100 yards) and said "uh, no, I got one". I waited till everybody came closer then we looked for it. It had gone maybe 40 yards down a ridge, just out of sight, with a bullet through both lungs, and dropped.
Lessons learned:
- All that range time paid off
- You don't need to lead a moving target at 100 yards (I led the buck about a foot)
- The bucks come out last
All in all, I'm happy with this one. If nothing else he'll be mighty tasty
