My FR8's. Update and new photos

Nice!
$100 more then.... what? I'm just curious what they are selling for.

As to the people saying they are nothing special, I would say they are unique for sure. Special is in in the eye of the beholder or seeker.

I paid $900 shipped for the rough one, and $1000 for the nice one that is coming, since I've started looking, only only found 3, one for trade, which is the one I ended up buying for $900, one on ####### for $2500, it was an excellent example, and the one I got today for $1000 which is also and excellent example, also found two FR7's for sale in that time, one for $1400 which I ended getting for $1100 and one for $1500, which also sold.

Prices may have gone up wildly...but they are still a $500 rifle in my mind as they just don't offer a significant piece of history to demand more. All in my humble opinion of course.

The best milsurp finds I've found, I've always stumbled into.

Right on thanks for the update Craig, prices on many suprlus guns have gone up a fair bit over the last 5 years or so... I wonder how many FR8's are in Canada?
I always thought they were kind of cool being fairly compact and chambered in 7.62X51.

There are plenty of more historical firearms to Canadian shooters, I find it odd that as the price of everything goes up, some items that are deemed less collectable are expected to be frozen in time... I wasn't in the market in the 90's when these guns first started coming over from Europe but given the inflation since then, $500 today would probably represent a decrease in value..... unless they sold for under $200 back then which is possible.

They are rather unique modified mauser's with their flash hiders and ability to launch grenades, plus peep sights are not so common with Mauser's.

I suppose a real Mauser nut might want one for their collection just because, and perhaps Spanish people as well would be interested as it's a part of their military history.

Ah, man, I feel for you. I remember that thread and hoped you'd get a good one.

There's a lot of wisdom in that statement. Try not to obsess about a single rifle, there's many fish in the pond. Just keep a list of "would be nice some day" in your mind, and pick ones off the list if you happen to stumble across a deal at a gun show, or some dusty shelf in a small local gun shop.

I've corrected minor warps before soaking the stock in scalding hot water and clamping it to a hard flat surface to dry in alignment, yes. Steam would work even better.

I built a steam chamber for bending some wood baseboards in a house with a lot of round curved walls, I went to Value Village and picked up a cheap electric cooking pot and then made a plywood lid with a hole in it and piped the steam through 1 1/2" ABS pipes into a larger section of 6" pipe with end caps.

It would be worth a try.

Always been a $6 to 700 rifle. Sitting for weeks and sometimes months on the EE until some guy decided to buy each and every one for the next 2 years. Maybe he has a stash of ammo, who knows. DO NOT fire 308. It is backwards compared to 556 and 223.

People do panic buys right now as if bolt action rifles will be banned, lol.

6 months ago you couldn't buy a rifle in 6.5 CM, now the market is flooded, same will happen with other stuff.

SKS's were once a $99 rifle as well, And now they are $500 for a Chinese, And I seen the latest Russian imports are up to $750 today on a dealer thread. Unfortunately the price of everything has sky rocketed in the gun world, It rarely comes back down, Especially for milsurps. A nice light short Mauser action rifle chambered in the very popular 7.62x51 is a fairly sought after item these days. it checks a lot of the boxes people want, Look at the Ruger gunsight, They sell incredibly fast for people looking for the specs I just listed.

If anyone's interested I'll share the photos of the not so great FR8 when it was listed for sale. Looking closer I can now seethe screw in the front sight housing.
I'll also share the photos of the nice condition one I bought today as well.

Leave a bad review, GP admin will support you.

Technically It was a CGN purchase, Even though it was also posted on GP, I didn't contact the seller after I received it because as I've said I suppose I didn't ask the proper questions, An honest seller would have listed all the issues, But honest sellers seem to be dwindling these days.

I just bought a Spanish m43 stock from Marstar, I should be able to mod it exactly like the FR8 stock, And I'll pick up some parts from Numrich as well, Once the stock is done and the metal is re coated, and I find replacement front sight set screw that fits(I'll try my set screws once my parts are done in the Evaporust bath) It should be a fairly decent looking shooter. Patience in waiting will be my biggest issue now.

I always wonder why everybody on the EE has a 100% trader rating when misrepresentation is so rampant. Can't trust anybody.

So what’s the point of this thread? Buyers remorse?

Take the time and research what you wanting to buy. There are resources to study online… allot. Learn your sheet before you buy… simple as that.

It isnt always easy. You can ask for more pics and they take it with their 20 year old nokia flip phone. Its a gamble buying online unless its new. Ive backed out of deals after noticing small details but it took quite a while of staring at the pics to see them

$hit happens sometimes
I bought a vz52/57 recently on here but when I received it I realized that it was not a 52/57 but a 52 with a chamber insert
This was not disclosed in the add and when I mentioned it to the seller she got snarly with me
The rifle is in beautiful condition otherwise
But if I would have asked for more detailed pics and asked more questions…

Don't recoat the metal. If you paint it with cerakote you will spend $200 to knock $300 off the rifle's value.

It's your to do with what you please, but this idea is a very bad one. Pretty much everyone here will agree.

I would wager I read just every peice of info I could find online about FR7's and FR8's in the weeks leading up to getting one. Threads on forums dating back to 01, as time progressed so did the known information about these rifles, Including the largest rumour of all, that these weren't chambered for 7.62 NATO, you can track the processes of that claim through the years from 01 to approximately 2016 on different gunboards when the correct information started making its way to surface(translated). I didn't jump into this rifle knowing nothing about them, far from it. I Jumped in feet first due to the sheer scarcity, and that was my issue and the entire point of this thread. You could know everything about a certain type of rifle and it's history, but without detailed photos you aren't going to know about it's condition. So like the title suggests, it's a cautionary tale of what can happen of leaping before looking.

Don't worry Claven, when I say re coat that includes parkerizing ;)

Another common blunder with the FR-7/8 that people have to watch out for is if the front sling attachment is missing, which yours is unfortunately. I wouldn't even buy a nice one if someone had previously chopped it off unless I was scavenging for parts.

It there, it's just a small little ring and pin on the left side of the rifle, I have it removed right now in order to get the front sight housing off the gun, what a bear that was too

I have lots of milsurp rifles. If I wanted a rifle for your stated purpose of camp gun. bush busting, and range gun I would not buy a milsurp.I would get a new or slightly used modern plastic rifle like a Ruger American Rifle. No collector value, but, slap a scope on it and you are good to go. Shoot the hell out of it, don't worry about bashing it around.
With your current rifle I fear you are going to be throwing good money after bad.

A milsurp in good condition= collector value, treat gently or use roughly knowing you are loosing value$ and if that is not a problem , then cool.
Milsurp rifle that needs fixing=strong pass unless you want it for parts or you are a "serious" collector and just need it to complete your "set" with no intention of shooting.

I had an FR7 years ago (20+). Shot it awhile and wasn't that impressed with it.Sold it and got a Remington 600 in 308 , used on EE for $600 in excellent shape. Still have it, youngest son took a caribou with it when he was 12.No regrets.

My2 cents.
