Don’t want to continue hijacking the other thread so as suggested I’ll detail the setup here.
My goal here was to put together one rifle that I could carry for almost all the big game hunting situations I might encounter.
I wanted a shorter barrel to be more manageable in heavy brush. Light enough to be carried in rough and remote areas, but also heavy enough to be stable for longer distance shooting.
Reliably was also a primary concern for me, doing some longer duration trips in difficult to access areas I wanted it to be as mechanically simple and robust as possible. I looked at several options for an action to build off of and eventually settled on a crf model 70.
Cartridge selection took a lot of thinking, being in some areas where encounters with large bears are becoming more and more frequent I wanted something capable of handling a worst case situation if need be. I have probably read too much of Keith’s writing and having always enjoyed playing with wildcat cartridges I chose the 338-06AI.
Anyway, enough rambling. He here are the detsils
Action: Pre 64 Winchester model 70, originally in 30-06
Barrel: ibi carbon hunter profile in 338 cal 1-8 twist.
Stock: McMillan in the Winchester sporter pattern
Optic: leupold Vx-5hd 3-15x44 in leupold qrw rings
Load: Imperial 30-06 cases, annealed and sized. Nosler 265gr ABLR, fed 210 primers and Hybrid 100-V for powder.
Average velocity for my fireforming loads is 2410fps with excellent accuracy
Weight: Comes in at exactly 9# loaded and with a sling installed.
The initial barrel install and re-inletting of the stock was done by Bob Galloway, it was later sent to PR precision who made up the thread protector and scope bases with custom iron sights incorporated.
