My journey as a first time hunter

We all had a journey of being our first hunt. Mine was back in 1977.
Today I hunt alone and close to home.
Learn to call a white tail buck in with grunts and rattled antlers. I've called in at least 6 white tail with grunts.
4 mule deer with antler rattling.
All the best.

Great thread Bishop! Looks like some great spots! It’s great to see new shooter taking the bull by the horns and getting out there and with an ethical approach! My daughter has expressed desire to go hunting as well and I have the common issue of not wanting to go out into the wild west of Calgary as well after having an incident with my daughter out there with some yahoos!
Anyway going to enjoy your journey on here and can’t wait to hear it unfold!

UGH, so some potentially bad news....

The ranch that has that buck on it I want to target. The lady just texted me with a message saying she forgot to tell me that "her son has first dibs and has booked November 1st to 3rd" and some other dates.

I am sitting here crying LOL there is no way I am getting that buck now as I can guarantee her son won't pass that buck up. I don't know what tags he has, but my only hope is he doesnt have a general whitetail tag. Chances of that are slim to none, and slim left town...

I can't be too upset though. The fact I have access to private land at all is a huge bonus for me at this point in my time as a hunter. As the saying goes, beggars can't be choosers and I know what camp I am firmly in.

On private property with permission I do a couple of things. Offer the land owner some of your harvest, ask if they would like some help on the farm, volunteering your labor goes a long way with country folks.

Hopefully you can offer to shoot gophers or coyotes if they require this.

Remember them at Thanksgiving and or Christmas, even if it's a hello phone call.

These few tips have worked very well for me.

Good luck on your ventures!.....:)

Oh I have! LOL

the first day I went to their property, I brought with me one of my custom made "Mammoth" line end grain cutting boards and a few cans of cutting board conditioner as a thank you gift for them. And have offered my skills up for whatever they may need as a woodworker.

Nice work, your kind gestures will give you back ten fold!......:)

Went out and made sure my rifle was sighted in and ready to go. About 1 dozen rounds I felt I was pretty good to go, and then shot the above 3 round group at 220 yards. It looks to me like I am 1/2 MOA! That is the best group I have ever shot.

I think I am now as ready as I can be, I am headed out at 05:00 tomorrow morning for my first ever attempt at hunting!

Wish me luck!

Well, I spent the last 2 days hunting.

Day 1 I left after a cattle farmer was ticked I was hunting in a field 2 fields away and in the direction away from the cattle. I decided I didn’t want to make a headache for the land owner, so I packed up and left.

Today, went to another location with access to 6600 acres. 7:45am was happy I had the rifle and not the 3 whitetail does that snuck up behind me… I tried to get a shot on them but as soon as I moved, they were gone like smoke in the wind…

During the day there was a few more opportunities, but none that was a shot I was willing to take. The deer were in thick brush, running, never a side profile, etc.

Stopped for lunch at like 2 and a bit of a break. Had some coffee and snacks with the locals, got some tips of where to look for more deer.

Went back out late, like 4:40pm, and checked some more coulees. Last legal light was 5:26pm, and I spotted 3 deer, unfortunately they saw me too. Grabbed my rifle out of the back seat, and immediately went prone at the top of the ridge. Threw one round into my weatherby and put the bolt home. The deer started to run away and I started to berate myself for taki ng too long. They went from 150 yards and increasing the distance.

I took a deep breath. Realized I was completely calm. I didn’t have the adrenaline rush everyone talks about. I was prone on my stomach, my crosshairs were dead steady, I was breathing normally. The deer stopped at what I guessed was 300 yards. The biggest one stopped with an almost perfect broadside presentation. I figured I was 60-70 feet higher than the deer, I knew my rifle was sighted in for 200 yards… I aimed for what I thought was about the midpoint of the shoulder blade thinking bullet drop won’t be as bad as I am shooting downhill.

I let out half a breath and squeezed the trigger.

The deer dropped. It didn’t run, it didn’t make any noise. My head popped up in time to see the other 2 deer run off and the head of the one I shot at disappear into the grass. I immediately turned to the 2 guys with me, dead calm, and said “I dropped her.” I look at my watch, 5:11pm, exactly 15 mins before legal light for the day ends. One of the guys was the land owner and he says to me “if you dropped that deer you are a ####ing sniper!” He didn’t believe me that I got it.

I jumped back into the truck and we zipped back out to the road and into another gate that gave us access to the bottom of the coulee. Sure enough, the deer is exactly where I shot it. The land owner starts going berserk about making that shot especially shooting downhill like that. He was just incredulous, and my ego liked it lol.

A quick field dressing and it was in the back of the truck, and is now skinned and hanging in my garage!

On the drive home I decided to map out the shot to see just how far it was, and Google maps says it was a 300 meter (330 yards) shot! I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t feel confident in my abilities to shoot 100 yards never mind 330! But I like that when the time came, I was able to maintain my calm, control my body, and in the moment I was 100% confident that I COULD make this shot, and so I took it, and I am super happy I did.

Congratulations Declared Bishop! Nice shot.....:)

I'm glad your hard work paid off.

Thank you all for the kind words and encouragement! The community here helped me a lot in learning a lot of the aspects of shooting and played a major part in everything.

I spent the morning butchering the deer. I can’t believe how much waste there is when trimming. I tried to minimize it as much as possible.

Ended up with 48.5 lbs of meat. Lots of trimmings for ground and sausages. Some nice rounds to make jersey, and lots of steaks from the back straps and tenderloins.

My buddies say that if I got that much meat out of her, she was pretty big.

Welcome to where's the beef? After butchering and trimming. 100% correct statements from your friends. 50 pounds of meat would be approximately 100 pounds of quarters on the hook. Your buck was probably close to 150-160 pounds alive on the hoof. After gutting, skinning, butchering and trimming it does not leave a ton of meat.

The good news is you actually harvested a deer, many people out here in the East Kootenays haven't even seen a legal WT buck......:) LOL

Nice work!......:)

Went out again today….

I flippin wish I had a mule buck tag… I had this one dead to rights. My buddy is snapping pictures while I am prone, crosshairs over the boiler room, 75-80 yards away with a great broadside shot, just a whitetail buck tag, not a mule buck tag…. FML!!!!!!!!!!!

I will edit the post later to embed the pictures, I can’t seem to get the links from the app on my phone
