Here is something new. This is built on a commercial action, possibly a Greener as it has a safety. It is in excellent condition and has a 577 Sergeants model barrel installed that is absolutely mint. I have never seen or heard of this before but I am no expert. It seems to me that it isn't a "one of" as the time and expense to do this would be prohibitive. I am hoping some of the more knowledgeable members can shed some light on this.

Thanks. SJ

.

Ok..so here it is

That is an interesting combination. If this gun was originally made up with the .577 "fast twist" barrel and not a later parts gun, it could be a very early volunteer model when the volunteers were still armed with .577 Sniders and this was made up for someone in the volunteers who had the means to get the latest action but had to have it in the prescribed caliber. The .577/.450 is a more accurate cartridge and other than an eccentric love of the .577 Snider (which I can understand), or following regulations, I'm not sure what other reason there would be to use the older caliber.

Also a very good possibility, a couple of years back I handled both a commercial made martini Henry and a snider hunting carbine, the snider carbine took a shell 1/4 inch shorter then the standard cartridge and was fancy high grade in a beautiful checkered Burled walnut stock with silver hardware and some engraving to the breech, Just amazing I could see a custom order commercial martini in .577, I'd say it's a good possibility that's what you have there.

Is it built on the Greener police gun action? This has a receiver 1/8" longer than a MH. Greener started production of the police gun in the 1920s.

Seems to me that a few years ago a fellow by the handle of coyote on the britishmilitariaforums had a snider barrel fitted to a martini. This could very well be it. As I recall he talked about some vigorous loads for it. Might want to check headspace. Contrary to popular opinion, you can stretch a martini receiver.

The chamber is very tight and the action locks up tight. Other than that there are no signs of the gun being abused
