My My, how the tide has turned for the SKS...

not even close.....
a semi auto 303 british would be a converted auto Bren gun. Pretty hard to compare that to an SKS. That is not even considering the cartridge comparisons.

Back in the day it wasn't uncommon to see Finn SVT 38s and 40s commercially converted to 303Brit.

I had one for a while and it functioned perfectly with decent ammo. The odd time, it would push the cartridge out of the magazine, which was close but not quite perfectly set up for the rim diameter of the 303 Brit, which was appx .040 smaller. This wouldn't happen with FMJ ammo, it was the lead tip spire points and round nose hunting ammo that would hang up on the lip of the feed ramp.

It was a lovely little rifle and quite handy as the barrels had been cut back.

There's a few nice SKS-D's on EE that are approaching reasonable asking prices. Tempted, but I have become quite proficient with stripper clips, and I much prefer the Russians.

The flow of well used chinese sks will still come to keep the price low.

Maybe but the Russian price is going to soar. I was looking in the US market and there are very few for sale, here is just one I found at auction:

This is a typ. Russian refurb with non original stock selling for $900 + fees and tax (say 1200) which is about $1600 Canadian.

Here is another stamped REFURB selling for $675 + fees and taxes (say 900) which is 1200 Canadian.

This same rifle will sell for about $500 in Canada right now, so don't kid yourself, buy them while you can. The market decides the price, not you or me.

SKS and type 56 might be equally good, but they are not the same. I put a premium on the the originals (SKS) . That being said, I would like to find one of those minty unissued 56s.

In my opinion, the SKS is "the" Canadian gun. While it is far from scary and is not an assault rifle by definition, it would likely be on the chopping block if it wasn't for its widespread appeal as a multi-use rifle. I am most hopeful that it's here to stay. It is good to see that the SKS is selling well and more and more shooters are appreciating it's solid, well-thought-out design.

I think that Justin the a-hole won't touch military surplus, it opens a door to criticism by the military, vets and me.

sks is good value for $ and is a fun gun to own. I like how simple it is to take apart and the surplus ammo keeps costs low over 5.56.
