Hey there Richard. Nice Brno. I have identical rifle and have been looking for scope mounts for it. I see you have a new scope mounted so I thought I would ask what make and model of mounts you are using and where you managed to find them?

I have done a bit of handloading for my 8mm and have recently tried the Nosler ballistic tip 180 grain bullet. It works really well.
I have used North American 170 gr. factory loads from Win and Rem. They are OK but quite mild in comparison to some of the European stuff from Sellier Bellot and Norma.
Nice to see a young fellow aquiring a classic caliber and rifle. Excellent judgement on your part. I know you will enjoy it.
 
Regarding prices of 21's in the good old days. An old Czech gunsmith in the small town I grew up in imported a pile of them in 6.5 X 57 about 1950 - 1953. I believe he had some connection within the factory. He was selling the 21H's to locals for (to the best of my memory) $65.00. The 21F's were another $10.00. He had surprisingly few takers as the ammunition was not store available and he was the only handloader in town. As he'd just managed to destroy a Rem. 721 in 300 H & H few were interested in having him load for them. My buddy bought one but I opted for a 270 in another (and more expensive) make. I regret that choice now as that 270 is long gone. However some 21H's have come my way the last few years. One had the factory single trigger which was simply the forward trigger without the second trigger and setting mechanism. The pull was easily 12 pounds or more and non-adjustable. It was replaced with a Blackburn trigger which is very well made. The other was double set and is fine.
Both rifles are down at Ralf Martini's having Dakota 3 position safeties installed. One which had a some what butchered butter kinife bolt handle is getting a new Oberndorf style handle welded on. Hope they are back in time for fall.

I used CZ high rings. I got them off the EE so I don't know what stores sell them.

I think the 36mm is probably the biggest scope that will fit with these rings. The scope covers only just clear the sight.

Thanks Richard. I have seen CZ mounts in Russels and Wholesale catalogs. I will give them a shout.
You made a good choice in the scope as well. I have same model scope on another rifle. You are really well set up.
Looks like all you need now is a license and moose tag.
 
Brno 21H

I have two Brno 21H rifles. One is the long rifle in 7 X 57 and the other is a shorter model in 8 X 57. I have rings and for the 7 X 57 but need rings for the 8 X 57 model.

A neighbour of mine was in a bind just recently, his POL was expiring just after the last cut-off date for the registry. He has 5 firearms, none of which were registered, so he called me up to help him out. One of them is a Brno in 8x57. I registered it as a 21H as it has the DST and appears to be what the FRT indicated. The only discrepancy is that it does not have a butterknife bolt handle, just the normal ball type. Rifle is in about 60% condition with a horrid stock finish, it had been sanded poorly with metal above the wood. One upside is that it has the original claw style mounts and steel scope. As the owner was pooched for registering, I registered them in my name. When he gets his PAL, I am going to convince him that he needs another rifle as this one has to stay!:p
Just found this on another post-
I am not sure if you are aware that some of the earlier Model 21's(round-top) did not have the guide rib on the bolt, at least I have seen two that lacked this feature, also the last of the Model 21's had the ZG 47 bolt handle, Model 21 bolt body with long gas holes but with ZG 47 handle, very eagerly sought after(I believe God had a hand in putting these ones together).

Very nice Brno Albayo. I was recently talked out of my 21H 7X57 and kind of miss it. Might pick up another next time I see one. They arent to hard to find although 7X57's arent as common as 8's.

Nechako's rings are the quickest solution for the brno that wears a scope. They are ugly but tough as nails.

Anyone who has them may also get to enjoy the fact that the screw heads strip real quick. Our very own ################ has replacements for such an occasion.
 
An update of not a whole lot. :redface:

I'm embarrassed to admit it but the 21 has stayed a safe queen so far, I was working with other rifles at the time and a lack of funds kept it from getting bedded and shot.

I haven't been able to send it off to get bedded and I'm not sure if I should trust the local gun shop to do the job.

I'll try to get it out this moose hunt and get it nice and dirty. :D

just a thought... why do you think it needs bedding? I have a few of these, and i have not bedded one yet - the accuracy is fine with a little bit of load work up and a slight adjustment to the front bbl under-screw I find I can get them to shoot very well without the need for bedding.

I am not talking bench rest accuracy - but accuracy that is more the good enough for hunting at good ranges.

The bedding is not to do with accuracy but to keep the stock from potentially cracking.

It is a really tight fit and I have seen other BRNO rifles with a hairline crack in the tang.

This one is so nice that I don't want to take any chances.

It is so nice -- a very very nice example of a 21H.

That is why I would hesitate to bed it - but I take your point about the cracking. Again, I only have one that ever had a visible crack at the tang. Some - if they are old and dry, crack in the wood between the trigger opening and the magazine well - that is not visible and may be repared easily enough.
 
The one I used to have in identical shape started to crack after only a couple rounds fired. The wood will shrink and the tang start to take the load.
The Brno's are nice guns but IMO not too nice to avoid setting them up properly. I hate to filly them with epoxy too but there will be no safe queens in my arsenal.
Guntech bedded mine and there was no possible way to tell from the outside.
