Well, I don't have it in my hot little hands yet, but Dennis [Guntech]has shown me pictures of my new LR rifle that can also be used for the occasional hunt. It is a 6.5x55 AI [40º shoulder] The action is a 721 Remington, the barrel a Lothar-Walther in 1-8" twist. The action has been fully worked over by Dennis, and I will install the Jewell trigger when it arrives home shortly. The stock is a Remington 700 Pepper laminate, and the barrel/action is bedded properly in it. I have great expectations for this one, and should have enough "oomph" to be very effective out to 1000 meters and beyond. I will be trying the 139 Lapuas and the 142 Sierras first, and probably the 140 A-max as well. Here's a pic of the product. Regards, Eagleye. [Thanks a lot Dennis!!]

Will do, Jerry. The inside finish of this barrel looked very good. Dennis said it was nice and straight as well, making machining setup easy. Dennis also mentioned that the stainless seemed a bit harder than the usual stuff he works with. What that will mean on the long term remains to be seen. Won't know unless we try, will we? Those who are using the L-W barrels speak highly of them. Regards, Eagleye.

Funny how the Europeans can make wonderful hammer forged barrels but the US can't. Maybe it just boils down to QC.

I like the spiral pattern on the outside of the barrel too.

I hope that you get close to 6.5-06 performance with that tube.

Are you planning on 'widening/flattening' the stock for BR shooting?

Jerry

LRC; Will put one of my Leupold 6.5-20's on it for now, possibly a nightforce is in the future. [Too broke right at the moment:( :) ]
Jerry; Will add on a flat wide support for BR shooting.
Regards, Eagleye.

I love the leupy mark 4 6.5-20 scope, All BS and hype aside I think it is as good, clear, functional and everybit as good as the N.F. but cheaper. I even prefer the Leupold Recticals over the N.F. Mine has served me very well and wouldnt considder trading it for a N.F. But thats just me.

Jerry looks like we got another recruit for the Summerland shoot next year, hope I can make that one;) :D

Steyr,Tikka and as far as I know, SAKO all use hammer forged barrels. These rifles shoot quite well.

I just heard that there is planned a large resort facility near where I shoot. Hopefully, this will not stop useage. That would be a real pain.

Good news, we will just drive a little further to another location and shoot. My goal is have a fun day every year and if there is enough interest, twice a year.

For those who live nearby or want to travel lots, we can shoot every week.

Jerry

Eagleye, Nice rifle, what is the barrel lenght?

Funny how the Europeans can make wonderful hammer forged barrels but the US can't.
Ruger also does their own hammer forged barrels, they have been for over 10 years.

An excerpt from the Ruger site on the M77 Mark II:
They also feature a three-position safety that allows for safe loading or unloading with the safety "on" and hammer forged barrels for accuracy, made entirely in the United States of America.
