Pretty simple, it's a Mossberg 500 Field 12ga with the 28" barrel. I'll see if this one does better than the 590 shorty at trap.

Good solid platform for most uses. I am a Mossberg fan I have a 500 in 16 gauge. Yours has some kind of cool pattern in the fore end wood. Use the FULL choke for trap. Enjoy the new gun.

Thanks. That design is just lighting, it's not really like that. Tell me, why choose the full choke over the improved cylinder?

Looks nice. Should do fine with the proper choke - Full or IM. One doesn't have to have a really expensive piece to enjoy shooting clays. It will be a different matter when one becomes seriously involved in busting clays.

Last week, I was watching three young guys shoot Trap - two of them had Mossberg 500, the other a BT-99. All three were hitting birds consistently, all were breaking birds average 23/25. Another group of spectators, senior members who only shoot trap at the club were commenting "oh, those guys must be skeet shooters!" :)

Unless your really fast on the target the IC choke is going to through a fairly thin pattern for trap .as most targets are broken somewhere in the 35 to 40 yard range .I would use mod at the very least for 16 yd trap .

Take both if Mossberg provides an IM tube as well. I haven't shot Trap in quite a while but when I did both worked for me (different guns though). Couple guys who used to shoot with me, one used an XF (for Turkey) while the other simply used a Mod. Both were excellent shots at the game.

Is it ok to shoot the gun with no choke installed? With those threads exposed, will they get damaged without a choke covering them?

I must say that both my Mossbergs had terrible manuals. They are both the same manual and really don't answer a lot of questions I have.

LOL, obviously you will risk damaging the threads! As far as a smoothbore barrel threaded for screw-in chokes is concerned, it is important to ensure that an appropriate choke tube is properly installed before using the shotgun. I would also recommend that prior to first time use, clean/lighly lube the threads inside the muzzle as well on the choke tube. Subsequently, clean/lube those areas everytime after use i.e. during your firearm maintenance session. Such attention to detail will prevent any chance of seizure of choke tube inside the barrel.

Typically most shooter use either a mod or full choke, but many doubles shooters use IC for their first barrel because they know where the bird is going to come out of the trap machine.
However, I have two guns ( a 16 and a 20) that are IC/MOD and I swap the barrels several times during a relay because these are my field guns and you cannot always count on a live bird getting up where it is supposed to!
The last time I shot my 16, any birds I missed were NOT because I was using the IC barrel but because I shot behind the bird or lifted my head!!
To put things in complete perspective, I regularly shoot between 15 and 20/25 with a cylinder bore gun with black powder loads and 1 ounce shot charge.:)

I have shot clean rounds of trap with a Mod. You don't need a tighter choke from the 16 yard line.

Don't disagree. However, in the case of somone just getting into the game, I have generally observed that reflex/reaction times are usually slower - due to that, normally, for the new shooter standing at the 16 yard line, the launched bird is already soaring 40+ yards away when the individual takes the shot. Personally, I've found the IM to be the best compromise.

Great input, thanks! I will take all the chokes with me on my next session. I will also ask a lot of questions, so thanks again. I've only done three rounds so far. And that was with a 590 tactical shorty (20"). But, the guys there said "just bring what you have" and try it out. Was it ever fun! I'm hooked, and that's why I bought this gun.

As for cleaning, yes, I did. Gave the whole gun a cleaning, lubed with G96, and treated the wood. Should I just use the clp to lube the threads? Or should I move to some kind of anti-sieze?

Never seize works well.

Ok, I have some kopr-kote. Thanks.

That's what I use. Awesome, messy stuff lol. I'll also echo a full choke being a good choice for trap. Of course, pattern with all your chokes. But I saw my scores improve switching to full. Gives you more time to point and track.

More pointing less tracking. Trying to be precise and moving your eye back and forth between the bird and the gun is a recipe for a lot of misses.

I've posted this before, its old, but one of the best videos I've seen for a new trapshooter.
