My Norinco Type 97 Shorty - Range Report Post # 80!!!!

If it was non-restricted I'd consider saving up for one... maybe they'll come out with one with a longer barrel.

People that want longer barrels are compensating for something....:D:nest:

Seriously longer barrels make baby jebus cry, and IMO it ruins the look of the
Type 97...for petes sake it's a bullpup, it's supposed to be short!!!!!:mad::mad::mad:

People want NON-RESTRICTED guns,
they want to go shooting in the woods,
they hate ATT and other restrictions.

We all hate ATT and other restrictions...but this is a type 97 Shorty thread....it an extra inch makes the type 97 non-restricted that's cool. And if someone wants to put an longer barrel on one fill your boots. But a longer barrel on a 97 shorty would look very not cool, my eyes water when I think of it.

I wonder which model will win shooting matches. Shorty with short sight radius, or the LMG type? If you've shot short ARs, you will know the answer, but hey, I'll end up getting an $800 Shorty as well as the Long. :D:stirthepot2:

So...where is the range report?!?!?
Did you received the rail/mount? got pictures of it?

Come on!! don't keep everything for you and share :D

In case of broken pieces, do you know if Leverarm can order backup spare parts?

this toy looks more and more attractive...

PS: if you don't mind I will use your picture to get some informations.

I'll be going to the range on Sunday. The mount is supposed to be here on Monday:mad::mad::mad:

Just my luck!!!

So I'll have to do range report part deux to test the mount and optics:D:D I ordered the mount mount from Atlanta Airsoft. Be warned: the shipping was as much as the mount...

I know someone looking into making a mount from stock.

Tell them to make a sighting hole through the center. The Airsoft unit doesn't have one. Probably because screws mount through the top. Also the clearance for a standard picatinny mount is very tight on either side of the rail. When I bought my rifle I had the guy open a standard picatinny rail so I could see if it would fit. It does but theres not much room on either side of the plastic carry handle to mount optics. That's why the realsword one is raised a bit farther than at first glance would make sense. Also - the rail that comes with the rifle is very skinny so it doesn't give much space to drill and tap a rail to it. What is really needed is a small mount that is kinda shaped like a cantalever that mates to the norc mount and comes up at front of the carry handle with a half size picatiiny mount. It could be mounted much lower and a little bit forward as eye relief for red do isn't an issue.

what about these rails like Marstar does have?

Nope - although the upper handle looks the same as the AR it's actual dimensions are much different. The steel rail which also contains the rear sight on it is housed by a polymer "handle" that comes up around the rail and sight providing protection for the sight rail and charging handel. You can't intall anything to the handle because it is not solidly fixed to anything, It kinda slides in around the rail and rear sight and is held tightly in place by the receiver cover. It is designed to be removed for cleaning.

Range Review!!!

Ok guys - so I took the Type 97 out to the range on Sunday. I put 180 rounds of various brands of .223 and 5.56 through it. It digested everything without a single failure to feed, fire, or eject. Recoil was light and muzzle blast/ noise was not bad at all. The rifle pointed naturally and the sights worked fairly well though I think for my eyes a red dot is needed. The trigger, like I've reported earlier, was surprisingly light, though it had a fairly long mushy take up.

It launched the Brass forward right at about 2:00. It didn't treat the brass well:D

25 yard, near rapid fire, offhand group. I messed up and forgot targets so the only I could find were these scope sight in targets. One 9mm hole in there for good measure...

75 yard group. The rifle weas nearly dead on at 25 yards (I only had to make a slight horizontal adjustment to get it right on) but it was about 10-12 inches high at 75. I wanted to keep the sights on at 25 so I had to aim at an old target below the one I put up to hit the paper. Needless to say it wasn't an ideal set up for shooting for groups. I was able to nail our 125 yard gong offhand consistently so I'm pretty comfortable with the way the sights are set up, though if someone has another suggestion on how they set their rifle up I'd like to hear it. This is a CQB gun so 25 yards is about right I think. I also think I could have done much better with optics, but more on that later....

Ok - I also got my realsword scope rail today. It is well built (CNC Machined Aluminum). It dovetails onto the existing rail and two screws on the top of the unit pressure fit it solidly onto the rail. I'd be a little worried about durability if the set up was on anything other than a .223. I don't think I'll have any issues once I locktight it in.

I put my trusty Bushnell red dot on it, which has been on everything from a .22 to my Guage. I hope to buy a better optic sometime soon. I'm thinking of an Aimpoint Micro, Zeis Z-point, or one of the new Leupold Prizmatic Gunsights. If anyone has any opinions on this I'd Like to hear it. Because the mount is so high I want something that will mount low, like the Bushnell I currently have installed.

Lastly- overall impressions: I LOVE THIS RIFLE. It's my hope that more people buy the Type 97 so that it opens up the accessory market. I'd love to see an ambi mag release produced and a better designed scope mount. As it is, it is the most fun I have ever had with any rifle I've shot.

That's it guys! Enjoy!!!!
