Here are some pictures of the stock before I do any sanding. I'm actually surprised at how well formed it is - I had seen some other stocks on this forum that looked much rougher than mine is. This one is what they call 99% press-fit inletting, so I'm hoping for an unexciting bedding job.

Seems to be a very nice fit.....

You got lucky, I ordered one for a Savage 17Hmr, but it was no good, had to be sent back, and unfortunately another one is not available, fortunately they were true to their word and a full refund was issued, including all shipping charges back to them.

It will need a lot of sanding, starting with coarse paper, and work your way up to as fine as possible, and then finish it as you wish.....

I had to give up on Richards, and was able to find a Boyds stock here locally, just about ready to put the action back in the stock, I did like the look of the Richards stock, over the Boyds, but if it don't work, can't use it....

Really take your time on the sanding, once you start adding the varthane, it will show every imperfection, I used a can of clear, and then rubbed it with 000 steel wool to dull it down, I am waiting for the trigger guard and magazine floor plate to finish

Good luck with your project, it should look good once done

I just recieved mine from them, it will require far more sanding and shaping than yours.
Mine kinda looks like they used a chainsaw to shape the outside of it. The inletting is OK though.
Workable, but rough.

When sanding, how do I deal with the recoil reduction pad? Do I remove it? Also, for my finishing, I'm using Tru-Oil.

Rob

I did not remove mine, I saw no need, you probably won't remove that much material at that end of the stock. If you don't want to scuff it, tape if off would be the best way,

have a look at this, it will give you a good idea on what to do......

and use the gloves as he does to apply the Tru Oil, don't use rags, they can leave bits and pieces on the stock.....

Even using Tru Oil, and if you don't want the high gloss, use the steel wool at the end to dull it down....

If I can find the pics, I will post them of the Richards stock I did get, it's too bad it did not work out......

Rob,
that looks like it has a nice size and sturdy fore end to shoot off the bags. I reckon its gonna look good. Please update this thread when you get it completed.

How long did it take to arrive from ordering?

Any issues shipping to Canada?

Sorry to answer this, but I had one shipped as well

no issues, you already pay them shipping, however, when it arrives, there is tax to pay and a handling fee to Canada post, cost me an extra 25 bucks or so

nice thing was, I had issues with the stock and had to return, Richards covered all the expenses, and I mean all, I was not out a penny, even shipping it back was covered, and the above mentioned tax and handling fee they covered for me....I would not hesitate to do business with them in the future

Considering the price, selection and availability to Canada I am quite happy with these stocks.

Mine required minor work to fit the action.
