Okay I am currently at the range. Temp is -20 with wind out of the N @ 24 with gusts to 41. So far 2 for 2. 3 more to go. It is pretty nasty out but I love a challenge. Till later.
I had a balmy 3C today with some gusts out of nowhere. I have no flags to give any clue.
This is my Rem 700 VLS with a McLennan 1-8" twist I rechambered in .223 Ackley with a round count of 5,000+
Trigger set 2.5lbs and this action is not blueprinted or accurized. I just unscrewed the original barrel and installed this old F-Class barrel.
Load was 25,0gr of WC735, 55 grs Berger [Moly] and 205M primer. This load is not developed, just what I have on hand.
I'm not a trained Benchrest shooter and never competed in any event. I think I know why I retired this barrel a decade ago.
Well I blew it. Target 4 I dropped a shot. Then 5 I said what the HEY............... Blew it big time. Anyhow here is the target and the rifel setup from today. Exact same setup was used yesterday.
I also forgot to mention the scope is a VX3 8-5-25 with target dot. Farrell 20MOA base and TPS rings. Also sports a Jewell trigger.
After 10 targets 50 rounds I am sitting at a .4984........ I have my brass tumbling and am almost loaded up for the next round.
Challenges like this make you a better shooter and load developer. I shoot BR competitively and I am enjoying this challenge. Still have to get 5 for 5 but it will come.
I should also mention that on targets 2 and 3 the first shot went low. It should have printed closer to the second ring as it has in the past. I ended up holding low to make sure the shots would go in the group. Something you must also learn while shooting. You have to trust yourself that your rifle is in tune and you have to chase the first shot.
Yea, this is fun! I'm going to rework the trigger and try some different load combos. This barrel really liked 75grs JLK's. I still have a few boxes left.
To keep it in the spirit of things, I'll fire a few foulers off record then shoot all 5 groups.
Until next time
cycbb486,
I see you're trying not to make feel too bad.
I was rooting for you even last night......I know what you do and what your capable of.......but we all have a new problem to face with this challenge and I for one am not happy..........somebody shot a 0.168 five shot group with my duece today.....I am sure she is going to upload the pictures later today.............I might have to bust out the 6br............or the 30br if the wind picks up.....
I know I can hit the half moa 5 in a row....thats never been a issue when conditions are right, but this new 0.168 group is eating at me......
5 groups, same powder load but not my ussual front rest.......
Same set up as before minus the front rest, this is not my usual front rest...
Weaver T36 scope, Savage 12 F-class/shillen select match barrel in 222 rem
+5 and overcast
smallest group was 0.253
average group 0.370
I did better when I was doing my work up loads, going to try it again maybe off of my usual front rest........
the two fliers on my .4 groups were not welcomed in my group.....luckily they stayed in.
I usually shoot off of a Cowan rest but today was setting Abbycat up on the Caldwell for the match tomorrow.....I tried to convince her that she wasn't up to par and should think about taking up something else..................
Thanks Yodave. I was deciding whether or not I would go out with the strong winds. I was close. I am loaded up. If it is not as windy tommorrow I may go out again. It is supposed to be highs around -20 like today. Just hope the wind is down.
Good shooting on your part. Wish I had your weather this way. What you shooting for powder and bullets in the triple deuce?
