My rifle shoots 1/2" groups @100 yards all day! Really? Prove it.

Haven't been near the range for yrs, just curious how long will it talk to shoot those 25 rds to get that king of score, I know yrs ago it took a long time to keep the barrel cool, Just my thoughts.

Count on a minute a shot, I doubt it takes me that long but I am used to shooting a string of 30 for score
just shoot slow and steady, if your barrel gets that warm then spread out to 2 minutes between shots, caliber and cartridge are really going to be your deciding factors.....

I like the idea of a sticky, but I don't think there is a need to do a monthly or yearly thread. If it was just kept as an ongoing thread I would just keep adding the names of those that completed the challenge successfully in the original post.

GO CALVIN.....................You can do it................

Yodave, I am trying. The conditions the last 3 days I have been trying this have been HORRIFIC. I cannot believe that I shot a couple of 3's today. Honestly this is the best that this .223 has ever shot. Especially in the wind. I do not shoot it a lot. When April comes it gets put away and I concentrate on the BR rifles.

I worry that if the temp comes up to say the teens that this load will not work. Will have to wait until next weekend to give it another go.

I was hoping there would be more out giving it a shot. All I know is when I decide to look in the EE Forum I know who's rifles to look for....... ;-)

JohnnyG1, if you were out shooting in the weather I have been the last 3 days I do not think you could shoot fast enough to heat the barrel up. I shot my groups as fast as I could feed my rifle. If shot 2 followed shot 1, I reloaded as fast as I could and let shot 3 fly. Etc. Etc........ The BR thing coming out.

Another Savy CGN'r took a try at it today with the duece......haven't heard if he made it or not, but this not only proves "my" rifle, but some shooters' abilities as well......I was hoping to see more results from the weekend...any day of the week has got to include sub zero wintery days I am sure....

Is it possible for a rimfire? I'll give it a shot. Would be easy at 50, so it might be possible. It's only twice as hard right?

Its not up to me, but I'll watch with great interest to see if you can do it, a rifle is a rifle and the claim has been made just as much with rimfires as it has with centerfires........

I might have to try my rifle out with that cheap winchester white box stuff that everyone raves about..................

I'm gunna either achieve my goal of making it into this thread with my axis or shoot the barrel out of it in the attempt.

Thanks yodave and the crew I had an awesome day, and thanks for letting me take the triple duece for a run, I really enjoyed that.
(You may need to start renting it out so other people can have a shot at top score)
Largest group was a .397 and the smallest was a .144 average of .302

doesn't count............its my gun and we all know it shoots 1/2 moa all day everyday...........

Its now posted in the EE....it got boring fast.............

I think yodave has one for sale

Price keeps going up with results like this............The real pressure is on Fred0000 now, we all know he can do it....and he knows how badly I want someone with a stock savage axis to post some good results.........

Congrats again Fred000, gives me a new goal to achieve.....if I ever get the duece back from Abbycat..........

Hey Fred0000,
If you kept them out of the black square the groups would be easier to measure.

NormB

That was partially my fault.....I gave him a couple of clicks up so that he wouldn't mess up his aiming mark..............

Wait I don't know much about precision shooting but how can the group be smaller than the caliber ?
I tried that on them the other night, but I quess if they shot 5 bullets through one hole and deducted the size of the calibre they would windup with the tightest group which would be a big zero, I was taught how to measure a group about 50 yrs ago but apparantley I am wrong, and that was from a gunsmith that use to shoot 9/16 in group with a 25. Just my thought's.

They can be smaller because of the way it was determined to calculate group size.

You measure outside to outside minus the bullets diameter. In reality you are supposed to measure the size of the hole left in the paper by the bullet and subtract that diameter from your measurement. That was what I was taught when I got into BR. Ideally you use an actual measuring device which makes it a lot easier.

You can also look at it from this angle. Your first shot on paper is the given bullet diameter, it is not a group yet. Your group begins to form when shot 2 goes though the paper. The distance that the bullet is away from going through the exact same hole is the margin of error. That is what people are looking for. The smallest margin of error the better.

Not sure this helps?

The definition of group size being referred to here, is the definition that is used in formal competition, not a definition that a particular gunsmith chooses to use.
