Ruger American .270 with Boyds prairie hunter stock

Well Got my first 2 pieces for my Deer Gun today ... Cant wait to mount this scope on my Ruger American rifle.

Got my EGW rings from Brownells since they were cheaper then thru EGW directly...

And I saved a bunch of cash thru Prophet River for my scope... Redfeild 4-12 X40

Now This is my first .270 what is the best grain in this caliber ?

Thats going to be a great setup ! If you'd like a do all round I would recomend 130 grn hornady GMX or some barns TTSX s , they will take care of anything you'd like to tip over .

Thanks mahony1977 i will buy a few different brands of 130 and pick the one that groups best on cold bore....

here are some 130 gmx's and tsx's i loaded velocity was around 2950 ish fps

left to right
Barnes TSX shot into dry paper at 100 yrds
next was a Hornady GMX into dry paper
then another TSX into wet paper
and finally a GMX into wet paper

Sorry for the ignorance, but what do you mean by shooting into dry/wet paper? I too am trying to find a good load for my .270 and that expansion looks pretty good for deer. What does a TTSX have over a TSX as far as performance on light skinned game? What bullet to choose for say hunting bears or hogs?

Well just got off the phone with P&D enterprise.... My .270 is on its way for 399$

Hopefully I will get it b4 next Friday....

this riffle, Redfeild scope, EGW rings and Harris Bipod combo cam in at 750$ B4 taxes I dont think I can get better then that for a deer gun....

Does anyone here have a Ruger American yet > ? What are you thoughts on it....

I don't care for the Stevens, Marlin, Ruger <$400 group personally so will refrain from commenting on the rifle other than to say I really do hope you enjoy it.

As far as the .270 it's like the higher quality vanilla you can get, and it's quite easy to make them shoot well. 60gr of H4831sc and 130gr anything. Pick the Partition, Accubond, Barnes, GMX, E-tip, Swift A-Frame, it doesn't matter. I've killed moose down with that load as many others have and it plain works and has shot well in any rifle I put it in.
If you want to get away from premiums I recommend the 140gr Hornady Interlock and 58.5gr H4831.

Anyway, enjoy the well budgeted rifle.

Yeah this is my 1st budget rifle... I cant wait to see what it can do.... and if I don't like it ill throw it on the EE....

Yep, and although it is not my specific grizzly rifle, it has laid down several of the bigger bears in chance encounters on sheep and caribou hunts. In fact, one of the best ways to find a grizzly is to go sheep hunting.

As well, it is my distinct impression that I have made more one-shot kills on big game using the 270 with 130 gr bullets than any other cartridge I have used over the past 50+ years.

You are going to really enjoy your 270!
Ted

I shot a lot of deer with 140gr hornady's in my 270. Nothing got away. That was a long time ago and the tougher deer of today would prefer the expensive bullets. LOL :D Now I use much bigger guns

Sorry about the s**tty cell phone pics... Still waiting on my Harris Bipod...

Heading to the range this afternoon if the wind drops...

Were you hoping for sub MOA performance? Still, 1.5" out of a $400 gun with factory ammo isn't bad. That's still a dead deer as long as you put the shot in the general area of where it needs to be.
