My shooting results. Please advise or criticize

My results from yesterday's session at 50yd.
Some ammo has shown promising grouping. Some other turned out to make horrible group spread (see the third image). I wonder if it's the bad ammo on the last picture or if anything happened to me or the rifle that the grouping was so bad.

I find Win .22lr ammo to be hit or miss, if the rifle likes it you’ll get decent groups. It’s obvious when it doesn’t like it lol. Now that you have a couple brands that shoot well enough practice your fundamentals over and over, someone else asked already but is your optic mounted properly? Are the bases or rail and rings torqued to spec, same with the action screws? Are they hand tightened or torqued, you can experiment with torquing action screws incrementally and see if that affects groups as well.

Yeah, thanks. I'll focus on my fundamentals and load my rifle with the CCI SV.

Not torqued. But all screws sit very tight.

Results of today's attempt with CCI target SV look promising.
4 groups of 5 rounds each
The Top right one was the first target of the day

I feel that the 16 inch barrel on my rifle may become a limiting factor pretty soon.
Will talk to the store I bought it from to see if I can return the rifle (bought it used from them), and potentially get something more serious

I wouldn't. Keep it as you will regret trading it off. You got this one figured out and will have to go through the learning curve all over again. Not to say that you shouldn't upgrade. Keep it. Don't trade it off.

I'm with OldFart - since you're shooting really well with your rifle, it would be a shame to toss it.

I am curious though, what is it about a 16" barrel that would limit your shooting?

It is my understanding that a shorter barrel is not as accurate than longer barrels at a longer distance. is it not?

I think it depends on a bunch of factors.. but to be honest, I don't know enough about it to say for certain.

That said, I think some of the factors would be:
  • is the bullet stabilized before leaving the muzzle?
  • how much steadier does a longer barrel make your hold?
  • would the longer sight radius make a difference?

Honestly I don't think. What I see is good for that rifle and a person of your skill level. It's a entry level target rifle, not an anschutz.

A store is not going accept it back as there isnt nothing wrong with the rifle. Its shooting well.

Eugene, IF you're planning to continue with bench shooting I'd keep this until you're more experienced to know what you REALLY WANT out of a rile. A longer barrel makes little diff in 'short range' like 100-150 if you're of a bench. Your 'form' is more important at this point. IF you OD plan to change, consider selling this on EE or ####### (if you want to stay local, FTF). Prob get better money than 'back to the gun store'.

Thanks,
Good advice. Much appreciated.

It sounds like I should hold to this rifle and start putting some money aside for the more serious one to get in the future.

The last target is looking good, makes me think the gun can shoot more accurately than you think. Once you start to find ammo it likes and you start getting comfortable with it, a cheaper gun can surprise you sometimes. I’d be happy with those results from a new to me gun as a newer shooter, I wouldn’t worry about the barrel length. You likely won’t notice much at the distances you’ll be shooting it, I’ll take a short heavy profile barrel over a long skinny one. Might be a touch louder but a short barrel is handier if your out hiking around with it.

My go to .22 is a $250 marlin xt22vr, I love this gun. The target is with cci mini mags @ 50m off bags, it shoots better than I can lol. I used to be more concerned with groups but I’m a lot more into practical results, it has put a lot of hare and grouse in the freezer.

I’d like to nail the 50y rimfire challenge with it just to be on the list with all the high dollar rigs, for a $250 rifle with a $230 scope it’s never left me wanting more.

Eugene, your rifle is fine. You may sell it for something that shoots poorly. Even after you save and get a better bench gun this one will serve you as a sporting gun. The barrel will make little to no difference as to length. Keep practicing and be patient.

I went to the range today.
Now that I know wat ammo my rifle likes, I need to get rid of all the test ammo I got, so was doing some shooting today to spend that ammo. I tried to be accurate, but it really doesn't work.

Before I left. I decided to shoot with the ammo that my rifle likes, the CCI Target SV, the result is something to write home about :) Makes me happy:
