I have been working on it slowly for the last year and kind of wanted my SKS to go in this direction (minus the ugly paint job):

So here is how my SKS evolved (I did not worry about messing it up as it is a non matching refurbished 1950 Tula SKS, which has been painted black and not blued. This one is a shooter not a collector item).

I started with a Tapco mag, and decided to add a barrel mounted bipod:

Since it was painted not blued, I decided to polish the bolt and receiver cover and thinking about doing the rest of the metal as well (even though it would be a huge pain in the ass in the corner areas)

The stock I am in the process of sanding down (half done - look at stock vs gas tube wood, 1st pic) and thinking of staining it black, if the stain doesnt turn out well, ill likely sand a bit more and then spray it black.
^^^ EDIT: over the course of time, the sanded down stock wood look really grew on me, not sure I will be staining or painting it at all

Next I wanted to add a pistol grip to the wood stock:

You have to shave away wood from the stock to make a flat surface to accommodate the grip (I used a utility knife) and cut away a rounded edge at the back of the grip:

I think in the future I will cut away some more stock material behind the pistol grip to be able to get a better hold on it.

Mounting the grip:
I went to Rona and picked up a 5" hex bolt and nut, 1/4 inch thick (a smaller 3/16 bolt would be better but they didnt have any). Alternatively I wish I bought a proper ak bolt and nut (thought it would be included).

Then I drilled into the wood stock at an angle and tightened the bolt down with a wrench. In the future, I will epoxy in the nut into the wood to make the mounting and dismounting a bit easier.

I decided I didnt want the bi-pod on, so it was taken off. Next I removed the bayonet and added a vented metal gas tube cover:

I would grind the bayo lug down but I feel that I will attach it one day or try to make the bayonet quick attach/detachable.

After researching on the net and watching a few videos, I did a trigger job as well (not pics at the moment), but basically I changed the sear engagement angle, cut a link off the mag release spring and polished the sear and hammer engagement surfaces. The trigger is much lighter now for follow up shots.

And finally I drilled and tapped the receiver for the choate mount:

I think I will be pretty happy with the above setup, it looks cool and will be fun to shoot. Let me know what you think.

I had some other ideas in mind for making a custom top folding stock, but decided I like the rifle in the configuration above.
(crude pics, only done in MS paint):

SPAS 12 shotgun, over folding stock

might look funny and the sights might be unusable when folded over, but I like the look of the SPAS 12 stock when its extended out!

I did buy a 2nd stock and made a cheap prototype to test function. please see post #6 and #18

nice job on the polishing, the rear cover looks great. polishing the rest would be majorly labour intensive when you start getting into the cast pieces like the gas block and front sight base. there is nothing illegal about adding a pistol grip whatsoever, the legal question is usually about replacing a butt stock with a pistol grip on a shotgun, so long as it stays 26" or more then youre good. the SKS barreled action is around 30"...you couldnt make it too short without a short barrel. I would go with a nice wood finish for the stock, painting wood stocks just wrecks the way they look for me. the distance you plan to shoot at will determine if a red dot or scope is best. if you go scope, use a drill and tap mount, not a reciever cover type.

thanks for the info supernova; I do think polishing the hard to reach places would be very labor intensive, might change my mind about that yet; I do remember the part in my firearms course about adding a pistol grip to a shotgun, thats why I had the concern, good to know it will not be an issue since I dont plan on shortening the barrel.

I will sand the stock down and give it a nice ebony stain and see how that looks, or maybe ill like it just sanded down and seal it that way.

Im thinking of installing a chaote drill and tap mount to the receiver and leaving my options open for the picatinny/weaver mounted optic; currently I mostly plink at the 50-100 yard range, so wouldnt need any fancy optic.

plinker 777, I have considered the trajectory and mine tends to shoot front and right, so it should be ok when its folded over (my buddys shoots straight up like you described tho), and I dont really plan to shoot it with it folded over anyway, but never say never haha

pic updates....

bough a 2nd wood stock for $15 to cut down... only temporary solution for a grip; I want to add an actual pistol grip in the future.

put a picture of a SPAS stock in autocad to get relative dimensions and the angle of the bend in the stock (162 degrees); made a cardboard prototype and turns out that when its mounted to the rear cover pin, the angle matches with the profile of the original stock (therefore same cheek weld)

made a metal prototype from an aluminum framing stud and mounted it on the cut down stock, should hold up to the minimal SKS recoil for now until I consider other materials to make the the stock stronger

Still have to modify it for proper length and make it lock in the extended or folded position, but its just a prototype

FYI: Pistol grip on a shot gun is the same deal, keep it over 26" and your golden.

As for the SKS, I dig the fact that it's different. Not my particular type of brandy but good on ya for doin' it!

obviously not everyone will like it :) should look better when its done

plus the extra stock was $15, still have the original

I'm thinking I kinda like the polished receiver cover in a glitter rock David Bowie kinda way! Sort of reminds me of some of the Medellin drug cartel or Sadam pimped firearms. Cool but ......... Not my cup o tea but I do applaud your creativity! Any plans for keeping it so shiny? Spray lacquer or something? I know..... what about hard chrome plating???
I'm just funnin with ya, :D go for it!

HAHAHAHAH...brutal...but..ones man junk is another mans treasure

lol ok so I gave up on the top folder for now, dont have the time or equipment to build a proper stock out of the materials I would want to make it out of.

Removed the bayo (hoping to make it quick attach/detachable at some point)
Got a steel ventilated hand guard installed and have to drill and tap the receiver for a choate mount soon.
Also got an ak47 pistol grip that ill install on the cut stock for now.

maybe a side folder or underfolder would be more appropriate.... hmm

A factory VZ58 side folder would be easy to do, and an AK underfolder would look badass. So long as it clears the magazine when folded. Have you looked at the ATI top folder for shotguns? you could probably cannibalize the folding mechanism and fiberglass it into your SKSs stock. Paint everything to match and you could blend it in nicely. SPASKS man. SPASKS

I liked your idea

I really liked that you were smart and built a prototype out of cheap materials. don't give up, building cool stuff takes time and sometimes you learn stuff by going down the road not taken. Almost everything I ever built started out as a cardboard template. ( I like delissio pizza boxes, just the right thickness). Keep at it, prototypes almost always look like ass in the beginning stages. I remember reading about hondas MOTOGP engineers mocking up suspension linkages with cardboard, and those guys have more money and resources than some countries. they also have five motogp titles won back to back so simple works.
