I have been working on it slowly for the last year and kind of wanted my SKS to go in this direction (minus the ugly paint job):
So here is how my SKS evolved (I did not worry about messing it up as it is a non matching refurbished 1950 Tula SKS, which has been painted black and not blued. This one is a shooter not a collector item).
I started with a Tapco mag, and decided to add a barrel mounted bipod:
Since it was painted not blued, I decided to polish the bolt and receiver cover and thinking about doing the rest of the metal as well (even though it would be a huge pain in the ass in the corner areas)
The stock I am in the process of sanding down (half done - look at stock vs gas tube wood, 1st pic) and thinking of staining it black, if the stain doesnt turn out well, ill likely sand a bit more and then spray it black.
^^^ EDIT: over the course of time, the sanded down stock wood look really grew on me, not sure I will be staining or painting it at all
Next I wanted to add a pistol grip to the wood stock:
You have to shave away wood from the stock to make a flat surface to accommodate the grip (I used a utility knife) and cut away a rounded edge at the back of the grip:
I think in the future I will cut away some more stock material behind the pistol grip to be able to get a better hold on it.
Mounting the grip:
I went to Rona and picked up a 5" hex bolt and nut, 1/4 inch thick (a smaller 3/16 bolt would be better but they didnt have any). Alternatively I wish I bought a proper ak bolt and nut (thought it would be included).
Then I drilled into the wood stock at an angle and tightened the bolt down with a wrench. In the future, I will epoxy in the nut into the wood to make the mounting and dismounting a bit easier.
I decided I didnt want the bi-pod on, so it was taken off. Next I removed the bayonet and added a vented metal gas tube cover:
I would grind the bayo lug down but I feel that I will attach it one day or try to make the bayonet quick attach/detachable.
After researching on the net and watching a few videos, I did a trigger job as well (not pics at the moment), but basically I changed the sear engagement angle, cut a link off the mag release spring and polished the sear and hammer engagement surfaces. The trigger is much lighter now for follow up shots.
And finally I drilled and tapped the receiver for the choate mount:

Scope:
I think I will be pretty happy with the above setup, it looks cool and will be fun to shoot. Let me know what you think.

I had some other ideas in mind for making a custom top folding stock, but decided I like the rifle in the configuration above.
(crude pics, only done in MS paint):
SPAS 12 shotgun, over folding stock
might look funny and the sights might be unusable when folded over, but I like the look of the SPAS 12 stock when its extended out!
I did buy a 2nd stock and made a cheap prototype to test function. please see post #6 and #18
