My oldest took his first, I know flame away, he should have had it by now. I am one of those father's who takes his kid hunting and "get your gun ready son, here it comes, here's your chance boy, too slow I shot it. Next time be quicker. Always next year"

We went in the bush Thursday night and came out Monday, our camp is 25 kms back by quad.

Here is our camp.

That is one comfy chair.

First day nothing.

Second day I took him out to our "go to" cutblock from year. Truth be said, we were almost done, seen nothing and no sign. I was waiting for him to run a cutblock and decided time to head back to camp. He came out and I said, might as well run this one too. So I sent him in and told him were to meet me. 1/2 hr later nothing. I went looking for him, the carb on that quad was bein finicky, choke cable broke loading it, and no time to fix it.

When I pulled up on him my 19 yr old had his armsin the air like a little kid. :dancingbanana:

He said he didn't see the moose, but he saw a track with dirt on the snow and he knew it had to be fresh. He started searching and saw a cow 70 yards away. Watched the cow a minute then it turned it's head and he saw it had ONE antler. Boom, flop moose down.

He used the mod 70 I bought him last year for graduating. 270 WSM using a 130 gr Interbond and 59 grs of 4350 (I know light, but I had no time to take him out to sight in the 160 gr partitions so we used them).

His brother was wild, we hunted that block hard last year, sign galore last year, lots of times we had moose tracks over our quad tracks coming back out, but nothing. THe oldest had never been there, 1st time in moose down. Mind you, he doesn't look mad in this pic.

I'm the only one not concerned about their hair. Here's why

You know, I have to admit I thought I had more hair than this.

We halved him up and heaed back to camp

It was an awesome weekend all around. We decided to take Mumptia along and he lucked into a sad little moose, nothing like the one my boy shot. I'll let him post pics though.

Nice job Riden. Congrats to your son. I have a few buddies that use 130gr interbonds in their 270s for deer, bear, moose, and elk. Great bullet, even better with good shot placement. Thumbs up.

I told him if it is close to heavy cover, and he was right by a heavy spruce stand, hit him in the shoulder and put him down, otherwise hit him in the brisket.

Bullet wasn't recovered. Went in the shoulder and the bone caused it too head for the spine. Moose never took a step.

Awesome story and great pics. Looks like you guys had a great time. Did you see any other animals or anything other then that moose when you were out?

The rest of the time for us was poison.

We went in to scout earlier and the weekend before I saw 11 cows, no bulls. My plan was to hunt this area, but I saw nothing.

All together I saw two live cows and two dead bulls.

But, took some time to scout and found some great territory to move our camp to.

I thought the same thing, but I got a nasty glance in the door and mirror at the same time.... ouch.

good moose for a youngster. He'll never forget it. Good job to all of you...

Yep, no way we were going to wipe the smile off that young lad's face.

I'll never get used to the feeling you have when you are out with a new hunter on their first harvest.:dancingbanana:

Just awsome.

It was a pleasure guiding you and your boys Riden.

Next year make the chili hotter.

Not likely to happen. A direct Mumptia quote from the weekend: "If I'm not careful, I'm liable to #### myself today."

Good idea, lets pile on the cayenne.

Great pics and wonderfull story. Nice to see our young people experience the wonderfull outdoors.

Not too sure about the "guiding" thing Mumptia, I know how you like to sleep.

Now what did you go and shoot a moose with a .270 and a WSM to boot?Didn't you boys read the "worst caliber thread" ? Here's a quote for ya:

Without a doubt the 270 win followed by the 270wsm.Both offer more power than necessary for deer sized game, but the .277" bore is on the small side for moose and elk.

Good shooting, good pictures and good story. (whispering) good choice of caliber too. :dancingbanana:
