My oldest took his first, I know flame away, he should have had it by now. I am one of those father's who takes his kid hunting and "get your gun ready son, here it comes, here's your chance boy, too slow I shot it. Next time be quicker. Always next year"
We went in the bush Thursday night and came out Monday, our camp is 25 kms back by quad.
Here is our camp.
That is one comfy chair.
First day nothing.
Second day I took him out to our "go to" cutblock from year. Truth be said, we were almost done, seen nothing and no sign. I was waiting for him to run a cutblock and decided time to head back to camp. He came out and I said, might as well run this one too. So I sent him in and told him were to meet me. 1/2 hr later nothing. I went looking for him, the carb on that quad was bein finicky, choke cable broke loading it, and no time to fix it.
When I pulled up on him my 19 yr old had his armsin the air like a little kid.
He said he didn't see the moose, but he saw a track with dirt on the snow and he knew it had to be fresh. He started searching and saw a cow 70 yards away. Watched the cow a minute then it turned it's head and he saw it had ONE antler. Boom, flop moose down.
He used the mod 70 I bought him last year for graduating. 270 WSM using a 130 gr Interbond and 59 grs of 4350 (I know light, but I had no time to take him out to sight in the 160 gr partitions so we used them).
His brother was wild, we hunted that block hard last year, sign galore last year, lots of times we had moose tracks over our quad tracks coming back out, but nothing. THe oldest had never been there, 1st time in moose down. Mind you, he doesn't look mad in this pic.
I'm the only one not concerned about their hair. Here's why
You know, I have to admit I thought I had more hair than this.
We halved him up and heaed back to camp
A couple of of pics of the boys skinning at night.
It was an awesome weekend all around. We decided to take Mumptia along and he lucked into a sad little moose, nothing like the one my boy shot. I'll let him post pics though.
