My Swiss Arms Story: UPDATE Post#162, My Theory on the Extraction Issues

I'm sure some people have concerns about whether the problem has once and for all been fixed. Has it been used in any extended range sessions since it was repaired, short of a small test fire outing?

I ran about 150 rounds the other day and then 200 today, While I did not video hundreds of rounds being fired I believe the two below video's illustrate that normal function has returned. It makes me want to keep it so bad.

Theory on cause of issues

So, now that everything is said and done I will share my theory of what may have occurred with the Black Special. I kept this to myself for a long time thinking that maybe SAN wouldn't help if they knew it had shot so much steel cased ammo. After all, Ruger and a number of other manufacturers say that the warranty is void if you shoot steel cased ammo through it.

Back when I first got the rifle, ammo availability for me was fiochi at 50c per round, or MFS for closer to 37-40c per round. So over the beginning of my time with the Rifle, I shot about 2000-2500 rounds of MFS steel cased ammo. Now, I have thought about it a lot and my theory is that shooting steel cased ammo had at least something to do with the problems I experienced with my black special. What led me to believe this was that everytime I picked up my brass cases, they had a big Swiss dent in the side, as is common with these rifles, but then when I picked up the steel cases, they hardly had a mark, why, steel is much harder than brass, so I wondered if maybe the steel cases worked like a tiny steel hammer, dinging/banging the brass deflector every time the rifle extracted. Maybe just maybe this altered the deflector's shape over time and this helped cause the extraction issues I was having.

Does that make any sense to anyone?

Anyone care to comment?

I suppose it's possible, although, usually, the cheap steel cased stuff tends to be underpowered so one might conclude they wouldn't hit as hard?

Could have just been a fluke/one poorly machined receiver/ejector? From what I understand this isn't exactly a common occurrence, though, and there must be lots of people who run steel case ammo through these guns without issue.

My comment would be that for a $3500 rifle, that shouldn't be a problem. I mean, its supposed to be one of the best rifles out there, no? Does SAN's warranty state they don't cover steel cased ammo use? If not, its on them. Alot lesser rifles handle all sorts of steel cased ammo, without reported extraction problems (ie SKS, etc)

I would agree, shooting steel cased or not shouldn't matter with a Swiss rifle, it is just a theory, that's all. It may also be worth mentioning that these extraction issues occurred mostly while using American Eagle brass cased ammo. It never once had an extraction issue with the steel cased MFS, so "handling" the steel cased ammo was not the question, as it did that just fine.

Like most firearm manufacturer's, SAN doesn't have a specific warranty policy. However, also like most firearm manufacturer's, they apparently stand by their product. So, it was on them, and they fixed it.

So the ads gone, you keeping this one or did it sell?

Thankfully she sold. Took longer than I would have ever imagined at the price listed. Oh well.

I hate seeing so much green when all I see out my own window is so damn much snow. :p

Those video's were last week, now we've got the snow too. Couldn't even make to to our normal shooting spot in the 4x4 yesterday. Instead we just did some plinking on the side of the road.
