My Swiss Arms Story: UPDATE Post#162, My Theory on the Extraction Issues

Have you been shooting 55 gr bullets most of the time ? My SAN rifles tend to like 62 gr or heavier bullets. IF it cycles on the no 2 setting maybe you just need to run a little heavier bullet so the gas pressure is a little higher for that fraction of a second it takes to push the heavier bullet out of the barrel .Which in turn should make the bolt etc cycle a little harder. THE gun was designed to shot a 63 gr bullet . THeories are fun. 5000 rounds in 12 months impressive !!! also the fact that you are getting help after that many rounds is a positive thing

yes, mostly 55gr, but it happened once with some 64gr soft point hunting ammo, same malfunction too. Also why would it function good for close to 4500 55gr rounds. It just doesn't make any sense. I can relax a bit cause I have the classic green right, but still, I want the black special back and working properly when I get it ye know

Nobody likes it when things act up or break and there seems to be no fix. A lot of other platforms are totally worn out after 5000 rounds . 99% of all issues i have had with any platform have been ammo or mag related. Bulk ammo isn't of the best quality all the time but sometimes thats all we can get

I've put close to 1000 rounds through my gun. Probably a few hundred since the last malfunction, doesn't seem to be a problem.

I was using Winchester white box 55gr and now I'm onto American Eagle 55gr. Not sure if one or both was with the Winchester.

UPDATE AUGUST 23RD

So, a few new idea's have been suggested and tried first was to check the dimensions of the ejection window, we are currently waiting on an email from SAN as to the exact specs. Second they installed a new barrel, this time Stefan said it took about 50 rounds for him to experience a weird ejection. This all happened with a new Bolt head, new Gas tube, new Gas valve, new Gas piston, and since the barrel comes with a gas block attached, a new gas block.

So we can actually say the gun is brand new now, except for the receiver, and still f**king around. They also compared my upper with 2 other rifles and noticed that ONE was bigger. We're waiting on more advice from SAN now.

So it's obvious that the receiver is the problem and I would suspect it's the upper.

So, I would think the next thing to do is either finish this now new rifle off with a nice new upper.....or take all the old parts and slap them into a new receiver, test firing it all first for function of course and then send it back to me.

Of course a new upper has a new serial number and counts as a new firearm, I wonder how that will effect things

No more LGR. :D

yes i know, but I assume they don't have any spare upper's just lying around, so they would have to ship one in from Switzerland (again assumption here) which means even with the registry gone, a new firearm would be entering the country, which means maybe more paper work, which in turn could effect things

Steve, I had an identical malfunction with a CQB/553. I remember it well, as I spent a half hour digging the ####ing case out. It only happened once when the gun was new, but also the bolt consistently would not hold open after the last round was fired. This only happened with .223 ammo (unless I shot in gas setting 2). With 5.56 it was not a problem at all. After about 800 rounds it shot both .223 and 5.56 with no problems. 2000 rounds later it is still malfunction free. In my case I thought it was the recoil spring needing to be broken in. Anyway, just wanted to share my experience in case there is any helpful information there.

My bets are on ejector as it is fixed and apart of the upper reciever. plus your rounds are ejecting forward and could be flipping the casing it back into the gun

Fascinating thread, just read all 12 pages.

Very impressed with all the help you've received. My sympathies that it wasn't a simple part failure.

Best of luck with the Swiss.

If I had a company that dealt with something like this I'd just replace the upper receiver and be done with it. Not every little mystery needs to be solved.

I'm sure they've seen this before in Switzerland - the gun, in some way, is worn out after the 5000+ rounds.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, I've always been interested in these rifles, and seeing how the retailer/company have treated your case is very re-assuring.

All the best.

I had the exact same issue with my 17.9 Classic Green Carbine. Luckily TSE was able to repair the issue in house and it didn't have to go to Switzerland. Unfortunately they didn't tell me what they did.

UPDATE:

Just got word that SAN will be replacing the Upper Receiver free of charge. It will be shipped out from Switzerland sometime next week. This just goes to show, that while it took a long time, SAN stands by there product, as a reputable manufacturer such as this should.

I will let everyone know more when I do, The Shooting Edge smith told me he would let me know when the upper arrived and everything was re-installed, I asked and the smith there said I will be getting all the old parts (barrel, Gas block, bolt etc.) back, they had tested a bunch of NEW parts out in the gun before it got sent to SAN so I thought maybe they would include all of those parts and I might get a basically new rifle. That would have been nice considering I put 5000 rounds through the original barrel in the first year I owned it, but I couldn't care less whether it be new parts or old parts, just as long as I get my rifle back in working order, which is what it looks like going to happen.

Steve
