My taper pin obsession re: LMT

Theoretically, taper-pinned is better, as it's less likely to work itself out during firing, especially prolonged firing when the metal heats and expands. I say theoretically, because I doubt it will ever be an issue for your average 5 round (or even 10 round) mag civvie shooting semi only. For the people who use these as work guns with full auto, or shoot a ton on a TR course, it's more of an issue, but still not much of one.

I just checked my LMT, it's straight pinned.

wouldnt a straight pin be less likely to work out as it would expand at a constant rate? where a tapered pin with different dimensions and a ramp to help 'push' out might just do that?

has this ever even happened before? heh. what other strange AR obsessions are there? maybe i have a few i dont know about.

There's the forge mark obsession, the Colt nomenclature obsession, the military clone obsession, the retro obsession etc.

it actually came to be that the lower i ordered wasnt in stock and i didnt want to wait for it to be, but the same one with the LE was, so impatient is as impatient does

The taper will hold better as there is a sort of wedging action. Tapers are used to hold lots of things using only the friction of the two tapers. Most drill chucks on a drill press are held in place by a taper, that's it. Just one taper against another.

With a straight pin you can just hammer the pin right through. With a taper pin, it will only go in so far before it wedges itself and never moves again. I've ruined many a punch trying to remove a taper pin.

Could have just checked the checklist:

How soon we forget...YOU absolutely insisted on that fecked up set up...Dumbass:D

just because no one made the barrel or flat top gas block of that length, in a combo that took taper pins. I'd swap out in a second if someone did .

I spoke to the LMT engineers about this question some time back... LMT stated straight up that NONE of their uppers use Taper Pins... they are ALL straight pins. This was a bit of a surprise as they list ONLY tape pins on their dealer parts listing and don't even list the straight pins... but they were very clear on this issue.

I can't say for sure if older production from a few years ago used Taper Pins or not... but for the past couple years they use straight pins.

LMT does NOT use two different production lines... all the product is made on the same line, tested in the same way... there is no difference between what they make for military, law enforcement or civilian... except of course for the "go fast" switch.

Not that it matters, looks like the AR makers use the pins interchangeably. DPMS and Olympic certainly aren't considered "top tier" even though they use taper pins...
