My unicorn has arrived! (Colt factory Dissipator)

Thanks Fenceline. I got tired of arguing the obvious lol.
I did. Barrel length from front sight to flash hider is different, handguard is different length, hand guard is different profile.

Even with a C7A1 without the railed upper and Elcan, with an A1 style carry handle, the C7 is a different type. The c8 is even more different looking.

Do all ARs look the same? Yes. And very much no. The Dissipator doesn't look anything close to "exactly like" anyone's issued Diemaco rifle of any genre.

Perhaps somewhat of a look-a-like to its Grandpa? .... in particular with the fixed carry handle

Oh ... and Yes I picked up one of these too.

Just need to find an A2 Colt buttstock, Colt marked 5/20 mag and a Bayo would be nice!

Bayonet wouldn't work with the dissipator I don't think? Unless they make one for the shorter length from the bayo lug to the FH?

So in 5 pages you guys still can't make out a mid-lenght from a carbine gas tube, even with pictures and someone having it in their hands? Really?

Reminds me why I don't take AR-15 information from CGN...

Someone pee in your cornflakes this morning? I don't see why else you would be ranting about a detail that was covered (correctly) in the first post, ignored ever since and is pretty much irrelevant to the discussion.

I'm curious, what was the CHP need/rationale in the original request for proposal or specs for this unique barrel/gas tube/handguard combination?

There must have been a reason based on their testing or requirements. Otherwise it would have been simpler (cheaper?) to just go with a standard carbine or full length rifle, i would think.

Very nice rifle, Sir.

From the research I have done it seems to be generally accepted that these were built for the California Highway Patrol (CHP), although the exact number of them built is unknown.

Very cool, thanks for sharing.
I recall an article in one of the gun rags about these and others done at the unit armour level (I think) - I'll have to see if I can dig it up...
It would be very interesting to see Colt's documentation on these.

Hey beltfed, whats the story behind the C7 serial number in your signature block

Very nice rifle, Sir.

Probably the simple desire to have a 16" barrel with a rifle length sight radius. Also the mid length gas system is supposed to be a little smoother cycling than the carbine.

A fellow on ARF.COM talked to a Colt rep who confirmed that these were indeed built by Colt, in the early 80's if I recall correctly. The rep would not comment on who they were built for and he did not know how many were built.

I was digging through a barracks box full of crap some time ago and came across a bunch of old note pads and aid d'memoirs. That was the C7 I used on my CLC. That was the most accurate C7 I have ever come across - in battle school no less.

It'd be interesting if someone here runs across it at some point.

They are 02/03 production by the proof stamps .... Internals are like new.

Just picked up a Fixed Buttstock off of a CGNer today. I will install and lost pics soon.

Same person, different hat! Public knowledge, not trying to hide anything. If you go to the "Arnie's Guns" dealer sub forum you will see that I have publicly listed "8 ball" as my personal account. Sorry, not trying to create a stir!

No, not that. You have a carbine gas system, not a mid-lenght! (maybe I'm the only one who finds this obvious) Colt has never, ever ever made any AR's with mid-lenght gas tubes, and dissipators were never made with anything else than carbine tubes up until very recently with BCM.

Well, I'll be!! You are correct sir! I never really thought too much about it, I had simply read somewhere that it was a middy. It's pretty obvious even just from the pics that it is a carbine length.

Obviously I don't recall correctly! I just had a look at mine and it has the same 10/02 date on it.
