Any advice you can give me is good advice :) But by keeping your pistol pointed "downrange" are you running into the "loading near the belt" and lowering your gaze away from what's in front of you problem? The department training has us keep it high...
 
I shot a CZ for years and did very well with it. There's a steep learning curve going from the one to the other with no experience on the latter. Mostly the trigger takes some getting used to. But the pistol is much more reliable and easy to manipulate and I'm confident that with a few thousand more rounds down range I'll get the hang of it :)
