My XCR-L 223 experience....?

Great reports. I thought that I could not have been the only one.

I don't want to date myself, but I originally carried an FN C1 in the military just before the switch to the C7. It never ceases to surprise me how much cleaner and cooler a piston gun runs.

btw anyone here figure out some of the more accurate loads for the xcr-l? All I've shot so far is 55gr Remington. Are the heavier bullets stabilized well with a 1:9 twist?

Hey, good to see another CF or exCF member here. Don't worry, I used to lug around that FN C1 as well. When I first started buying civilian rifles I was expecting FN ergonomics and boy was I surprised. That is one reason why I love my XCR, breaks down nice and easy, and reliable.

Apollyon, Yeah, the xcr has a FN feel for sure. Even the piston cycling feels similar. I like the AR, as referenced by my duty C8 note, but despite being light, there are things that rub me the wrong way on that gun.

Whether its the buffer tube clanging in your ear, burnt-on carbon, steaming hot ejected cases (compared to brass that has been sitting on a cooler bolt face) or gas in the face (oops forgot this is a family forum) and ridiculous restricted status.....I just could not bring myself to get a personal AR.

There so many good things about this XCR NR rifle. :)

I've taken a coyote, a doe, an 8 point and a 10 point buck with my XCR-L in the past year. I use a 6.8 kit for deer loaded with 115 gr Cor-Lokt ultra's and H322 powder.... I took the yote with the 223 set up on it at over 100 yards on a dead run with 75 gr Hornady TAP factory ammo..... :D Absolutely my favorite rifle, bar none.

Cool. I'll be hunting coyote just north of Ptbo in the next few weeks. (Thank you NR status)

How was the 75 gr ammo? Was the coyote able to give you any constructive feedback on how that round performs in the 1:9 twist, well I mean, besides its obvious deadness?

I just picked up a used one off the EE. Borrowed a decent scope from a member here, slapped it on, set up some cans at 300 yards, dialed it in from the dust print, and away we went. I have about 100 rounds of AE .223 through it on setting one now and not one issue. We were hoping for a groundhog or coyote though.

Gas setting '1" works for me too. On '3' the casings were being ejected with about the same range and trajectory of a 45/70. lol

Also, triggers were a sticking point on some earlier models. But my recent version breaks at about 3.5, and is about the best trigger I could imagine on a black rifle. It makes my creepy 7lb Canadian Colt trigger feel like a Daisy bb gun. "Be careful, you'll put your eye out!" tru story

have you run any surplus ammo through it yet?

sur·plus

/ˈsərpləs/

Noun
"An amount of something left over when requirements have been met; an excess of production or supply over demand."

I hate to be a bear for detail, but to me there is no such thing as 'surplus' ammo. Surplus ammo would simply be the stuff that I haven't shot yet, but am preparing to shoot shortly. lol

And yes, I have. The lead and the brass were both expelled with alarming distain.

I picked up a nearly new XCR-M (308) in a trade. My first centerfire semi, first black rifle, and first 30 caliber so I'm on a bit of a learning curve.

Honestly if I was to buy one it'd have been in 223, but the trade was good for both of us and I figured "eh, why not" :) Just need to get some 7.62x51 to feed it, because dammit 308 isn't cheap.

That's it I'm sold. For about 4 months I knew I was either going to get an ar or a xcr. I too was in the army and therefor I'm very comfortable with an ar but I like non restricted status of the xcr. No doubt I'll eventually buy an ar (for 1/2 the price of the xcr) but this thread sealed the deal. Xcr in 5.56 is mine haha only thing I like about ar's is there are parts everywhere.

canadaammo has 1000 rounds of norinco for $399

If you were with the PPCLI out of Edmonton than we may know some of the same people. You'll love the xcr-l, but get a later version with none of the earlier bugs, and enhanced trigger. It is a little heavier than a C8, but also feels much much more solid. FN C1 solid.

I tried reloading for both the L and M, the L with a load of Blc-2 and 50grn barnes varmint grenades stayed within 1.5 moa for 25rnds with no barrel cooling. Posted some pics in the "most accurate semi auto" Challenge. Lucked out with the VG's as I never would have tried them, a friend gave them to me as they "shot like a scater gun out of a bolt Tikka" lol. The L now has 10k rounds down it, still works flawless with any ammo.
The M, most accurate load was with Varget, but not extracting brass, too hot maybe. cant seem to find the sweet spot with CFE or Blc-2 but runs fine after switching to p-mags. Factory mag would not feed and bolt would not stay open on last rnd.

This might sound a little silly for a rifle with a quick change barrel, But I wonder if there is some way to 'bed' the barrel to make it more permanent and secure it more completely with the reciever? Hmmmm?

I also plan on having about 2 lbs of unused side rail removed with a milling machine to lighten the front end. I initially considered doing it myself with a dremel tool, but then I sobered up.
