Mystic caliber 44 mag...

if you watch the second movie "Magnum Force" he is in the shooting range with the bike cops. one asks what kind of loads he uses in his 44 he replies " its a light Special load" gives home more control than a 38 with wadcutters

6.4 grains of Red Dot, 240 SWC plain base in the 44 Special case with a medium stiff crimp. Classified as a warm load but not abusive in a good modern revolver IIRC.
Just as accurate at 25 yards as any 38 Special target hand load with equal 6inch barrels and target sights.

cheers

That's exactly how I loaded my light loads when I had my 44's. It was extremely accurate up to 50 yards, very close to match .38 wadcutter ammo out of a medium length barrel (5" to 6.5"). I now shoot .45 LC out of various revolvers and, when I used to load my own, got the same accuracy with warmer loads, 8.5 to 9 grains of unique behind a 255gr LSWC slug. 8.5 gr= 850fps and 9 gr= 900fps out of a 5" tube. Not too shabby!

Just picked up a '73 Model 29 with the 6.5" barrel.
Very cool find, with lots of rounds through it (but still good rifling)and holster wear.
It's a friggin' cannon!

Shoots like a dream. Well,...a really loud dream. You know, with smoke, flame and recoil.

"Uh uh. I know what you're thinkin'. Did he fire six shots, or ooonly five?"

This. Very accurate and your 29 will last a long, long time. - dan
