NEA 7.5" AR barrel - an initial review (shooting review added to post 1)

No, I bought it used in the EE. Never fear though, I have it on good authority it is going back into production in the near future ;)

OK, I think I have it "finished" now in a way that runs this barrel a little better. It's now wearing an Eotech XPS2-2, Troy mag release, Troy QD direct-mount sling swivel and a Spex 5.56 brake.

No more unburnt powder spitting back at me! (and it looks b@d@ss)

The next mods will likely wait until BCM comes out with an ambi Gunfighter later this year.

I plan to put a vickers on my M16A3 clone, not sure sure yet if I want it on this one. Maybe. I'll try it out on the A3 first to see if I like it.

Do you guys well the sling plus the GI-style A2 butt top mount without all the extra contractor package?

What he said about the sling! Get the Vickers. I have two of them and all of my rifles and shotguns have the adaptors so I can use the same slings on multiple guns. It's a worthwhile investment.

Claven, that carbine looks awesome! I bet she is loud and barky!!

Yes and yes. As a lefty, I REALLY liek the ambi control setup as well. If only BCM would hurry up and get their ambi version of the BCM gunfighter out to market, it would be perfect.

3) For only 300 rounds, this AR got DIRTY. It usually takes me close to 1000 rounds to get one as grimy as this one got. Lots of unburnt powder and gunk gets into the upper - more so than on guns with longer gas systems. Check this out to see what I mean. This was NOT dirty Norinco ammo either!

Wow! My 7" PDW doesn't get anywhere near as remotely dirty as this! I've been running PMC (not necessarily the cleanest, either) and Remington in mine - but my post-cleaning sessions have consisted of a few scrapes with the carbon tool, some G96 applied liberally, a bit of wiping, patch and 1-2 runs with the boresnake. I am running a TiNi BCG (recently switched to Spikes nickel-boron) with the PWS CQB, though. Let us know how it fares with the SPEX.

Is your PWS a piston gun or DI? Obviously, piston would run cleaner. Part of the reason it looks as dirty as it does is because it has a liberal amount of CLP mixed with the fouling (making it mostly soft fouling) and and MFS ammo is likely not as clean as north-american ammo.

Will advise on SPEX performance wit hthis bbl as soon as family holliday scheduling permits a range visit ;)

DI all the way, but don't mention "piston" and "cleaner" in the same sentence (some DI owners are kind of sensitive that way ;) ) Honestly, even my hard fouling wasn't that bad. Can't imagine MFS being that bad; maybe the flash hider is having more of an effect?

That could be. There is nothing unique about my setup. It uses the same DI gas ssytem as any pistol-length gas system.

I am running an aftermarket BCG which tends be easier maintenance.

Probably true, but not better enough for me to replace my BCG. I'm presently running a stag M16 BCG with Crane O-ring.

VERY nice for the $175 price tag at Armseast. I have them in all my recent builds.

Get an ACLM - problem solved.

The ACLM sucks for forward-assist uppers. They would be OK with a slickside, but with the FA, you always skin your knuckle.

Badger Ordnance makes a decent ambi CH, but unlike the Gunfighter, it still stresses the roll pin - and it's not available outside the USA at retail as far as I know. The ACLM isn't either, is it?

As soon as I looked at it, I knew you were a lefty!

LOL - there are certain things that as a lefty running a standard right-side AR, we all tend to migrate to with experience ;)

Selector, mag catch (I MUCH prefer the Troy system to the Norgon), and sling stud positioning are the most obvious.

It's odd to see a dealer run anything DPMS over a CMT or better-produced part with all the MPI, SP, and HPT whiz-bang ;)

The ST looks nice on paper and probably runs nice, but I have no functional issue wit hthe Stag bolt (which I belliebe is an MPI'd CMT product).
