NEA 7.5" AR barrel - an initial review (shooting review added to post 1)

It's odd to see a dealer run anything DPMS over a CMT or better-produced part with all the MPI, SP, and HPT whiz-bang ;)

The ST looks nice on paper and probably runs nice, but I have no functional issue wit hthe Stag bolt (which I belliebe is an MPI'd CMT product).

I like to try different things... Sometimes they work, sometimes not. The TiNi bolt ran cool, clean and reliable. I have zero complaints with it. Plus there's the "bling" factor. ;)

Nothing wrong with the stag, either. A buddy dropped a ST BCG into his Bushmaster and didn't have enough nice things to say about it, so I figured I'd give it a try (the self-lubricating aspect is certainly an appeal).

I have a CMMG M16A3 clone (AR15A3) en-route that someone put a Magpul MOE butt onto.

The only changes I plan to make to it are to drop in a spare Stag M16 carrier (did I mention I like them) and re-instate the A2 butt.

That being said, if I buy another BCG, I'll try one of the new ones with advanced coatings. If the new NEA 18" offering comes with a middy or rifle gas system, I'll be very tempted indeed.

Pardon, the ignorance here ut what makes a Stag BCG better than any other generic manufacturer? I've used Colts and Bushys and aside from one being a FA design and the other a commercial "civi" Colt, they all did the job.

Great review Claven, I've been watching this thread for a while. I noticed in your pics that you used some MFS ammo. I've only ever shot MFS 9mm, but it is very dirty stuff. Much more so than anything else I've tried, including dirty bird AE stuff.

Then you really need to try some of that Norinco 5.56 I was shooting. WAY dirtier then MFS...

You like Stag? Really? ;) Removing the Magpul is sacrilege, though...

I do happen to really like Stag. In my experience (some may disagree) their fit and finish is on par with LMT and I have no problem with them not HPT testing their bolts. Anyone in the industry will tell you HPT decreases bolt life - regardless of the M6 TDP.

This is my opinion, others may feel differently. Stag = top tier in my view.

I always use M16 BCG's as in my experience they are more reliable.

Excellent review/report Claven2, thank you for taking the time to post it up.

I am now convinced that I NEED to do a PDW build, and I think I'm pretty set on my list of components. Having said that, could you comment on your impressions and/or experience with the Aero Precision uppers/lowers? They seem to be a great deal for the price, but I'd love to hear your opinions on quality and value if you don't mind.

I'm a huge Aero Precision fanboy, so watch out - lol.

IMHO they are the best non-billet lower in Canada for the price. AP got their start making lowers for Armalite and they also make Spikes' non-billet lowers.

So basically you are getting an Armalite lower for $50 less than one with the Armalite logo on it.

Same goes for the uppers.

Buy with confidence.

The only reason I got the spike lower and upper is I like the spike logo better...

I dont like the Aero Precision logo... lol...

But yeah the are great....

Great news, thank you.

Back on topic now, you commented on the overly snug fit of the YHM gas block on the barrel in your initial review; are you confident in saying this can be attributed solely to the heavy parkerizing on the gas block or would you say the barrel dimensions had a part in the issue as well?

It's not the barrel. Definitely the YHM part. It was slightly burred and thick park too. Once I polished the park off, it went on perfectly.

The bbl mic'd to exactly .750"
