I'm prospecting the idea of an AR15. I've heard about NEA but they don't seem too popular on the other side of the border. I remember reading a thread titled NEA Kaboom here on CGN. Even Colts have had failures before but I would like to read this thread for information purposes. I found the pics on the net of the destroyed NEA on CGN but the link went to a place where I couldn't access. Tried finding a google cached page, didn't work.

What was the explanation in this thread regarding the catastrophic failure. Is there an archived version?

i say get one. the issues i have had were all fixed very fast by nea. within a week a had a replacement part due to them being in Canada. i have many trouble free rounds through the rifle now

I have about 150 rounds on my NEA AR15 7.5" and im loving it, i hope they are trouble free, now i juss need some 10 round magazines

The price of AR's is on the decline, spend the little bit extra on a quality firearm. Unless your willing to over look poor fit, finish, build quality and components, there are so many other options right around the NEAs price point.

My 2 cents.

Has anybody bought one of the NEA upper/lower matched sets from SFRC? I'm wondering if they jig them up in pairs and machine the takedown pin holes for a nice fit? Has there machining improved, I shot and examined one last week, the upper/lower fit was looser then my Norc and the lower receiver had milling swirl marks on it?

Im not bashing, just wonder how much they have improved as I am interested in the receiver set

I purchased a receiver set from SFRC and the machining was very good. The takedown pin holes lined up perfectly and provided a tight fit. I was very impressed. I am selling mine on the EE, not because of any flaws but because I don't have time to go through the build process right now, I thought I would have been able to get it done but you would be surprised how much time and money 5 kids take up.

Aside from the arguing above i say buy nea.
Its good quality since they've worked things out way in the beginning and your supporting a canadian manufacturer which for me is a big thing.

Quality and fit and finish is great, and yes Canadian manufacturer which is one of the reasons i bought mine plus a 7.5" barrel hell yeeeee

owned both the NEA and the norinco AR's, nothing wrong with either, if you want a shorty like a 7.5, the NEA is the best deal on the market, if you want a classic 14.5 a norinco will do just as good as any other brand, finish will just not be as good, and it doesnt come with the quad rails like the NEA does.

the brand matters far less then the individual gun coming off the production line, plenty of more expensive AR's are lower on the score sheets for competitions, and I have seen plenty of guys get frustrated when their 2500$+ gun has a stoppage, or failure, or doesnt win them the match.

I own a NEA and no way in living hell is Norinco better but thats your opinion

I say the Norinco is a better rifle , not better looking but a better rifle built to better military type standards , like a chrome lined bore and chamber , aggressive staking, more accurate barrel , better aluminum ect .. The norinco fit and finish reminds me of older colts from the 60s and 70s, not pretty but great rifles .. i would bet my life the Norinco would fair much better than a NEA in a high round torture test, or adverse conditions ..

I think this has to be my favourite thread of the day. :D

NEA: Because we suck and we hate you?

To the OP:
There are lots of AR-15s hovering around the thousand dollar magic-mark. NEA is one of them. It is undeniable that they've had some interesting configurations and designs, and equally undeniable that they have had their share of failures.

You will have a hard time getting an unbiased opinion. NEA riles people up, and rightly so.

I would suggest giving any rifle you consider buying a thorough testing. While quality has apparently come up, some of them are real lemons.

Well, this *is* all true.

I was an early adopter, and fortunately have been able to enjoy my rifle problem free (aside from getting a handguard replaced) from day one. I have over 2000 through it now, much of that through CQB and SR, and the rifle has been fantastic.

My trigger components were garbage, but, that's a personal thing. It functioned 100% with them, but, replacing them did make things a little smoother/lighter.

Since purchase however I've upgraded the barrel to a longer one, replaced the stock/buffer to an A2 rifle length, grip, trigger components......

Basically just the receivers, bolt carrier group, and handguard are original.

I love it though.

:agree: Mamma says NEA threads are better than watching her shows!

NEA, it angers up the blood! Some of the negative comments are so early-2012 ;)

Seriously though, there are now many choices of ARs in the $1000 range, certainly more than there were when I bought my NEA-15 a year and a half ago. Like Stevo, I've run mine at courses and matches without a hitch. Even managed to place in the top 3 out of 60+ shooters at the Team Hoser 3-gun match last month and my NEA never let me down.

Nice shooting man. Maybe one of these days I'll finally get out to your little 3Gun practices at the range then....

As Runningfool has pointed out, NEA burst onto the scene and hit a price point that was right in between the $700 and $1400 offerings. They sold a lot, had some growing pains, and then were essentially shunned by this here membership.

These days you can find them in reputable shops, so, handle one, look at one, and decide based on your budget. The company stands behind their product. Ultimately, so long as the gun runs, you're going to be happpy. The barrels really are fantastic, and that is the heart of any firearm, so, don't rule them out without figuring out exactly what you want.

I have been looking at picking up a 14.5 NEA as my first AR. After reading this thread I stopped by TSE and handled them in all the different barrel lengths. Fit and finish was awesome! Felt really nice I think for that price point they are fantastic AND Canadian made with an awesome warranty. And for everyone saying that there are plenty of better AR's in the $1000 range, where? Nicely finished with a very functional quad rail already on the gun, with a wicked warranty? I think you can guess what I'm going to try out for my first AR.
