NEA/BLC 102 Reliability

This is why you never buy anything gen 1 you get bent over hard because they didnt feel like testing it. Go figure people were going to use xcr magazines in them.

Put 50rounds of 155grain hornady american gunner .308 through it today. Almost every round was a failure to extract. 3 inch groups at 100m in a lead sled. I made the mistake of only bringing one kind of ammo. Im hopeing that the malfuntions were due to rifle break in/ too light a bullet. Also xcr M 10 rpund magazine dont work very well with my rifle. Magpul pmags did ok. Best were the IMI mags. Anyone else have any input on theirs?

Try some AE 308 or XM80. Each gun was test fired with a mag of XM80. If you're still having FTE's let me know.

I now have OVER 200 rounds fired with 4 'jams'.

The first 3 jams took place on the first range trip using FNM NATO fmj surplus ammo, in a string of two 5 round mags. Failure to extract, eject & chamber a fresh cartridge. I discontinued use of this ammo in my gun.

The most recent 'jam' took place today on the second range trip with Norinco copper washed fmj surplus. The first shot fired, extracted & ejected, but the rifle did not properly pick up the next cartridge & only partially chambered with the bolt sitting against it about 1/2 way up the case. Fired 19 more with no issues.

No other issues noted with the many other types of ammo tried. This rifle is reliable.

Cheers

did this happen with a metal xcr mag ?? i find the copper wash isn't as slippy on the feedlips till everything gets polished in with use.

also, i find most of the xcr are a hard 10 rnd mag,,,,, i trim the spring a 1/4 to 1/2 coil so i could get 10.5-10.75 rnds in.... hence why they won't seat on a closed bolt..... and will exert enough pressure to fte if you have one chambered and a full mag under it

Yes, it was with one of the XCR-M mags & Norinco copper wash fmj surplus.

The 5 XCR-M mags I have don't seem to have any issue stripping a round from a fully loaded mag & seating it in the chamber to fire. I'll keep an eye on it & if it does as you describe, I'd consider trimming a bit of the spring.

This rifle is reliable.

I wouldn't call anything with a 2% failure rate reliable (US fielded M4's are in the 0.25% range.) I also wouldn't call the rifle unreliable because at this point we do not have much data and too many variables in play.

It may turn out to be dead nuts reliable (I hope so - I've got one coming in Sep/Oct), and these bugs are due to the break-in or off-spec mags/ammo (relative to the rifle) or a combination thereof.

Regardless, thanks for all the great info Gents, it helps us poor saps that only got in on the 2nd order live vicariously through you.

I discontinued use of the FNM Nato ball ammo after 3 issues in two 5 round mags, ALL other ammunition fed, fired & ejected.

The ONE round of Norinco copper washed fmj surplus today 'may' have been the XCR-M mag, which is very tight when loaded with 10 rounds... Another member had suggested trimming the spring to release some of the pressure from a fully loaded mag, this may actually have prevented the ONE issue with the cheapest ammo I can stuff in the BCL102...

Honestly, I feel you are 'digging' here... I'd be on board with you IF it had done this with other ammunition, but it hasn't.

Not digging. Notice how I said it was too early to draw any conclusions. I do have a horse in this race - and am appreciative of all the great info y'all have shared.

I'm onboard with that. I'm posting my honest experience with the rifle. To date, my impressions are that it is reliable & has the potential to print really decent groups!

Now, I just wish I was the FIRST guy to get a deer with my BCL102, but I fear there will be other seasons that open BEFORE onterrible & I won't win that race!

Agree. Because of some of your testing....I depleted the local gun shop of all of the 150TSX's they had.:d

HA HA HA, better not cheat me out of getting a couple more boxes! Chuckle

Now I am literally TORN what rifle to use for moose this year... Nobler M48 Outfitter in 35 Whelen OR BCL102 in 308 Win...

can someone on this thread keep an updated list of the ammo that was ok and the ammo that was not.

If you are testing ammo with xcr mags please fill mag to 9 rounds only and dremel the left spine corner.

I believe BAD ammo so far:
FNM NATO Ball
Hornady 155gr american gunner .308

Good Ammo:
XM80
Norma Match 168gr
Barnes 150gr TSX
Norinco
R1M1 ball surplus
Hirtenberger 165 grain soft point
Federal 150 grain soft point
Federal 180 grain soft point

Yet to be tested:

Aguila 762x51
Hornady 308 155gr steel match

I'll start a new thread on this and copy this over, since this will just get lost.

Add to that the Norma Match 168 grain and Barnes 150 grain TSX which have been the best two for accuracy in my BCL102 so far.

So far I'm liking what I'm seeing. It is to be expected that not every rifle will like every kind of ammo or every type of magazine. And I never expect great results in both accuracy and function from cheap ammo. So far I don't see any results consistent enough to be carved in stone but I do see enough potential that this could be a really great performer.

Mine hates the federal Fusion ammo 150/165/180gr and other soft point ammo. Mine loved all boat-tail ammo. Got sub MOA groups at 100m with amercican eagle. Love my rifle so far. Dropped a TriggerTech adjustable trigger in it.
Is the aftermarket trigger you put in a ar10 specific trigger?
