NEA/BLC 102 Reliability

Here's my adventure from Sunday:

For starters, I wish I had found my glasses before heading to the range, but this was not the case. That's my story , and I'm sticking to it...

I had some American Eagle 150s, Hirtenberger, Norinco copper washed/steel, South African Ball, and various loads of 168 Hornady over Varget to sample. All loads were with fresh brass, full length sized, CCI primers. trimmed, chamfered, and measuring in at 2.800.

I started with a few rounds of the AE for a warm up, then proceeded to fire 10 round groups at 100.

I know I could do better, but I was having a good time and running through the rounds pretty fast. I did notice my Pmags had slop to them, and were very sensitive on feeding errors if I held the mag or "mono podded" from them. I had a fair amount of stove pipes as well. I didn't adjust my XCR-M mags before heading out, and they would not work as is.

Then I hit a bit issue. Remember boys and girls, steel cased ammo is not your friend in semis when running fast... I gave up on "load development" (if that's what you call $hit eating grin induced rapid fire), and decided to ring the 300 gong. I loaded up my mags with what I had in volumes - Norinco, and let her fly. I have to say, for bulk ammo it was doing awesome, hell, I just about had the little 10' gong spinning right over and couldn't seem to miss, then stoppage... Empty casing did not extract, and bolt locked forward. I decked the rifle into the ground twice, and in horror, had this as a result:

Good thing I left the factory rear stock on it for this trip.

The bolt did release, and yup, pealed the rim off the stuck round. Not a BCL issue, this was user induced stupidity.

All in all, sweet rifle, with more potential than I have skill. A real hoot to shoot. Now back to cleaning her up for round 2.

Well it would seem that most of these guns are not a fan of the norinco. I think this gun will be a loaders dream. My elchepo m305 loads shot well and I roll them for not much over what surplus gose for these days. The key is buy in bulk and raid the brass cans at your range when ever you can.

What kind of bulk are you talking? And what are you rolling...I just looked quickly and I'm not sure I can beat surplus rounds. Just asking.

Min 8lbs I run imr 4895 bullets and primers in the 1000 or 5000 range salvaged brass. I'm not sure what surplus is. But it must be up around .50 a shot I thinkbyoud be in the low to mid .60 on my fmj load.

They don' t seem to be fans of any actual 7.62mm period is my observation.
That aside they are sure capable of some impressive accuracy with good comm ammo or handloads ESPECIALLY for the price.

The stock had a replacement anyways, not a big deal.

I have a few k of the Campros in the stash, and was planning on loading some to try next. For plinking ammo you can't beat the price. Accuracy should be similar to the Norinco?

How does the chamber feel? Could some polishing or lapping maybe help with the steel case ammo? I'm no gunsmith but if there's something to stick to the laquer or whatever that goo is will build up faster, maybe a quick (and careful) spin with some extra fine scotchbrite or whatever you prefer could help smooth things out? Being that all the problems seem to be with steel case or thicker 7.62 brass I feel like it's a friction problem? Just a thought I had, not backed up by any real knowledge or experience, but a little scotch brite can make a sticky valve spool feel like new again so maybe it will help here?

46 rounds today with 3 malfunctions, all were stove pipes with the next round 1/2 chambered. Did fire 9 rounds of 180 power points from a XCR mag with zero issues, other than the brass will sometimes land about five feet away at 2 o'clock and others will land on the bench I'm shooting from. This is the same with all ammo I've tried.

Sounds undergassed a little. I would assume this is normal during break in of the likely stiff buffer spring, smoothing out of contacts, etc.

Undergassing, check for rough surfaces. Clean and shoot.

The S&W M&P10 chews through any ammo just fine , just sayin .. Im thinking they never tuned this thing enough , could be the chamber is too tight or rough?.. Most AR10 rifles i have seen with match barrels will never run surplus ammo well . Or could be a gassing issue .. Would be nice to try a Criterion chrome lined AR10 barrel if it works ? has anyone done a barrel swap?

SSG69, what do you mean by rough surfaces?

If there is anything that might be catching or misaligned that might need a few minutes with some 1500 or 2000 grit Emory cloth. Check to see the lugs on your bolt face to see if there are any gauges or unusual wear marks. Check the buffer retaining pin. If all seem OK, then it might be a matter of needing to shoot a whole lot to fully break the rifle in.

According to SFRC each of these rifles were test fired at the facility. 30rds each.

What I want to know, which I can never find any info on, is does it take ar-10 barrels? I'm a machinist by trade so it wouldn't be an issue to modify a barrel extension if need be, but i'm really not into the 18.5" .308. I want to build one with a 26 or 28' barrel, which seem to be easily had south of the border.

Glad you mentioned this, I was gonna ask AR10 owners what ammo they were using and what issues they had, if any.
