NEA in 7.62x39 - The Guinea Pig thread :)

Forgive my ignorance, but is this a known issue of the round/caliber or the actual operating system (weak lugs?).

I thinks it's an ammo issue. Norinco over expands in the chamber that makes it harder to extract and applies too much stress on to the part. I am staying away from it from now on. It brakes extractors even on VZ carbines (witnessed one failure at the range the other day)

This isn't a lug issue, since there are none broken, it could be a gas issue though.

Blaming the ammo? I've ran about 2000 of it through my sks. Only 1-2 duds and no other malfunctions... Granted that's an sks but still.

SKS can eat everything, you can't say the same thing about rifle that has been designed for a different caliber and different quality ammo to begin with

Expecting my windham weaponry AR to show up tomorrow, I've got a stock of norinco I was planning to run through it, I will let ya know how it goes.

Just from my personal experiences with NEA. Shotgun barrels, CCS system, AR's.....
I wouldn't guinea pig jack ####. Did it a couple times, horrible customer support, and only after I met Jeff face to face did anything happen. His PR guy failed... and in the end #### didnt actually get fixed and just got donated to Ryan @ funker tactical to maybe make something cool.

Guinea pig at your own expense, but I HOPE it works out great for you. But Im not holding my breath. I gave up because I would be dead.

It finally happened. Today extractor went kaput....

Finally went kaput, it's only been a week since your first post and 800+ rounds.

I mean if it were 8,000+ rounds maybe, but even that is poor reliability for any AR. It doesn't matter what you were running through it, corrosive or non, cleaning the gas tube or not there just isn't enough shots fired (if we are only talking 800+ rounds) to make this a tolerable scenario in my mind.

As much as I wanted this to be a success story (I was leaning towards giving one of these x39 rifles a spot in my safe) it can never be now, number one thing has to be reliability above all else and that just doesn't seem to be included with this particular brand/model of rifle unfortunately.

I did like your camera work though and appreciate your posting all this info. Please keep us informed of this rifles continued performance (or lack of it, sorry I know how much it annoys to have a range day trashed due to a malfunction of a $1,000+ rifle system) as I still would be interested in an accuracy report, thanks.

Cheers D

Update

Replacement extractor has not arrived yet. Not sure why it takes so long. Anyways, I've installed extractor from my superbolt and and did a quick test with Romanian surplus. Not a single failure. I've also replaced the muzzle brake with Troy Claymore to reduce the sound impact to the sides. While the original one works well the sound blast is very violent and I felt sorry for the other people at the range. Claymore performed very well, sound is thrown forward. Maybe a bit more felt recoil, but I can't be sure 100%. Was very cold at the range and windy to feel anything but cold :). Accuracy wise I am very pleased. Sighted my Vortex scope at 50 and got a nickel size group of 5 with one flyer. When weather gets better I will be able to give you a better idea about accuracy at 100 and further. Oh yeah, one more thing. After the previous trip to the range I've noticed barrel loose. Had to tighten it one tooth more.

I'm hoping the extractor was a fluke so looking forward to more extended firings of the NEA parts.
I'd really like to see this setup work.

I'd also like to see the Windham work as well. The more options for a reliable x39 AR, the better.
