NEA Swiss Arms Lower (First Impressions) ***UPDATE***

I thought you were going to get a custom mix of Duracoat/Armacoat (which ever one it is here) in the native swiss green/blue for the lowers? Who is the guy is Canada who does this again, anyway that guy was going to do it no? Maybe I dreamed it... entirely possible...:runaway:

You are right, Barret at Arma-coat has paint matched for the Swiss. We are just waiting upon our paint booth to be set up.

In the mean time, lowers can be done by the guys at Arma-coat.

nice to see that the chatter is getting looked at, altho im not to hot about the "you cant see it when its put together so it doesnt matter" reasoning

Overall i like it. Although your engineer looks like he/she got a little sloppy perhaps rushing production? I'd be torn a new hole for missing fillets+rounded edges pre fabrication, let alone catching that afterwards :p. Well not really to such an incredible extent, but machinist students know what i'm talking about hahaha... For the incredible amount of work done, i think that the product's minor flaws are nothing in comparison to the overall achievement (I understand the pain involved with converting an idea into CAD and then into actual fabrication).

I +1 on pictograms, if you have a fine enough bit that could produce a decent quality engraving.

Hah, no kidding.

Industrial Drafting student, here. I'd be kicking myself for a week if I forgot a fillet or a chamfer.

The flash of the camera tends to make details that aren't usually noticeable in person very apparent on photo. Do the marks stand out as much in person?

I'm still going buy one just to encourage local production. I admit I'm holding off just a tad to iron out any outstanding minor issues and get a color matching lower to my green special.

FWIW, I've seen pics of the forthcomming NEA billet AR15 upper and the machining looked excellent - no chatter for certain.

I think the NEA AR is going to be quite nice. After speaking with them, and discussing this subject, I am confident these guys are on the right track and are sure to bring some stellar products to the table.

Unfortunately, the defects are visible and noticeable to the naked eye. Although I tend not to agree with the excuse, NEA is right, the majority of the machining issues are internal and likely not noticeable when the rifle is assembled. Is this something you would expect to find on a $500 dollar lower? Probably not. NEA has said they will clean things up and I respect that they are receptive to customer feed back. Good on them.

All in all, There are more positives than negatives with this lower. I can deal with a bit of machining marks, an "S" that's upside down and the dark grey colour. I'm even OK with the magazine catch solution for now. The benefits this product brings, out ways any cosmetic or otherwise flaws.

The biggest benefit of all being the use of AR mags in the Sig. For those diehards who argue for the SIG mag, try fitting three of them in a triple mag pouch. Will not work. Often in a standard double mag pouch, only one mag will fit. The other task is being able to reliable extract those mags from the pouch. Under stress and time, they tend to get a little snagged due to the mag coupling nubs on the sides. You could cut them off but, I don't know anyone who wants to cut into an OEM magazine. Of course the cheap option is the Chinese solution CANAM is selling. It all depends on what is most important to you.

The next biggest positive for me, is getting rid of that fixed length of pull stock. Now, my rifle is shorter, more easily adapted to armour and heavy clothing. I can mount a rear push button swivel! Now my one sling functions across all of my platforms. This streamlines my equipment. No need for a second sling with HK hooks on it.

Those who have trained with or use the AR platform for work, get the added benefit of some muscle memory translation over to the Swiss rifle. Admittedly, I did become quite good at magazine changes with the old Swiss mags but it always bothered me switching back and forth between two different techniques.

The morning after this thread started the speeds and feeds had been dialled back and new samples were running to confirm the chatter is gone. Angryeyebrows will have a chatter free lower in his hands some time next week. The last two months have been hectic for us and we have hired several new people, not that its a reasonable excuse for letting the lower in question out.

Anyways, there is not much left to say on our part. For those who offered constructive criticism that is actionable on NEA's part, thank you as it helps us improve our product line. It was this product that inspired us to go ahead with the AR project and from there free float quad rails for the AR and Swiss.

For those who flamed away just for the sake of flaming....... keep on douching on......

Maybe I just missed it, but the thread seemed overall very positive to me. You still have benefit of doubt (launching this kind of projects is a huge undertaking and we understand that). A quick resolution could actually end up improving your overall reputation.

Looking forward to more pics! (On that note, can we get some pics of your machine-tools? :D)

Overall it looks great for a first run.
Would it be possible to order an uncoated, in the white lower?
I too am extremely picky about final finishes, and I see burrs, and uneven cuts that I would be tempted to pick at.

There is a burr in the letter F near the middle that I would pick out, leaving a shiny spot. I would also get the machining marks out from the rear cutouts.
I can get it coated here in a truer black.

I don't mind the extra work for myself, especially if I can get it at a slightly lower price for it not being finished.
What do you think?

+1 on pictograms, or at least consistent, and correctly oriented letters.

Good Work!

Got mine in the mail today, just got it put together. Everything went together smooth, it fits and functions nicely with an ambi mag release. It feeds dummy rounds nice and smooth. I did have to clip just over a quarter of an inch off the bolt hold-open spring, but as mentioned in another thread it was expected. as far as the rough spots go, I can live with them. I will post up some pics as soon as I get them up loaded.
