Has anyone tried out one of these?
I have some experience with a 5.56 rifle and everything works just fine, so some actual input for the 7.62x39 would be great.
SFRC has the uppers on for 10% off right now, so I'm looking for an excuse.......

For the price I'd buy the NEA upper to try before dropping over a grand or more on a complete rifle. I mean why not?

I'm happy with my NEA blackout

If I was looking at a whole rifle I'd probably go elsewhere, but who else is selling uppers?

None that I've seen.
I'm watching all the threads on the NEA but no one has spoken up about performance really. I heard one good review, guy didn't even clean it after shooting corrosive. It has the ARC+ but I think I will be cleaning mine well after corrosive (when it arrives). I missed that sale, you should go for it. Plus getting an upper there's no regi to deal with - kinda nice.

The sale is still on.

Report back on how well it does with the usual cheap ammo, if you would.

Honestly I'm mostly on the fence because I have recently become fed right up with the poor accuracy of surplus .223 to the point where I have to start reloading for it, and I don't want to get into reloading for x39.

If it gets 3-4+ MOA the fun factor won't last long.

I'll be happy to do a quick assessment when I get it to the range, should be this week - shooting LCW, Romanian and Norinco.

Ok I had my new upper out at the range today and ran into a common problem. I was getting light primer strikes on all 3 types of ammo I had: Chinese, Ukrainian and Romanian. This is mostly due to the Timney I have installed in my lower I imagine. I'm going to try again with a standard trigger and see how it goes.

I noticed on some American boards they recommend an aftermarket firing pin. I would have hoped that since NEA had redesigned the bolt that they would have also gone with this high reliability firing pin

I've got about 300 rounds through mine now. I've tried it with a light Wolf, standard AR, and Brownell's heavy hammer springs. The light spring doesn't have enough oomph, and the heavy spring has proved unnecessary as the standard spring is just as effective.

I used it at last weekends WRAS charity 3 gun at Spruce Grove, experienced zero issues, and won the Open division.

Here's a couple pics of the bolt and firing pin as compared to an Armalite .223 bolt and firing pin. The bolt OD is a bit over 1.5mm larger than .223. The lugs and bolt rim look narrower due to the rounded front edge, but they're the same thickness as the .223. The firing pin has a larger diameter tip and more protrusion than a .223.

Cool to hear about the pin, thanks.
Good to hear about the win too :)

I must have been better with my pistol and shotgun than normal. ;) The x39 certainly kicks more than my usual .223 AR so it's not the greatest choice for 3 gun. The stock trigger doesn't help either.

I think a bigger brake and a heavier buffer could tame it down some but double-tapping it like a .223 probably won't happen.

I just ordered my NEA upper in 7.62x39 from SFRC. I should get it next week. I also ordered the LCW deal from can am. Thanks for posting the results thus far. I was wondering how it would work with a standard trigger and buffer tube.
