Neck turning for a factory rifle?

I have a Witt machine brake on my 9.3x62 mauser, not pretty but it makes recoil much more manageable.
I had a model 70 Winchester in 300 wm before, it kicked like a horse. I'm curious as to how the synthetic stock will do with recoil, but the reduced muzzle jump of a brake would be nice too.

It's the weight of the stock, not the stock itself that matters. Maybe a boyd's laminate stock should be your #1 purchase?? Then bed it?? You could add a recoil tube - I think there's one on the EE right now.

Migrant, just to add a little bit further

I have several load tuning articles on my site and I want to find time to put up more info....

Keep good notes. Look for patterns and make sure you can tell where each bullet landed on target...

...the point is to build brass with consistent neck tension. Like consistent powder charge, it is part of creating the same "bang" with each firing.

Enjoy... Jerry

Has worked for us very well, especially the concept of repeatable neck tension.

Check out the tools by 21st century if you're needing new things. A little more money, but VERY nice. Available in Canada from extreme shooting in Winnipeg.

GGG has good taste in equipment...he's understands the value of it. (He's likely got deeper pockets ;) and for higher volume requirements of precision setups this makes sense :d ) For myself just putting one foot in the rabbit hole I purchased KM turning equipment from Mystic as a cost effective alternative to see if neck turning had any dividends for the smaller volumes of brass in our case. I've been satisfied with the tooling and would purchase more. If you go this route and don't continue I'll take the KM stuff off your hands.

I believe GGG and I were going through the neck turning thing at the same time. I share the same comments with regards to support. Mystic's been great for product and support, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase.

If you do decide to neck turn I am willing to share what's worked and what's failed in our situations to maybe help you avoid any pitfalls that may be discouraging...again when you are ready.

the LEE collet die used with a redding body die when needed

Works here.

...I know the accustock isn't the same as a custom pillar and glass job, but it should be serviceable.

My son's got the accustock on his stainless unit and that turkey's got better groups than me right now...but that will change.

Lots of good posts here. C-fmbi has got some good points regarding whether the rifle is a good shooter to begin with, but in my case the factory stuff was just all over the place, and that's not the situation now. This may just get you better results and there's cost effective options for tooling to try.

There are plenty of examples of people getting to 1000yds, and well beyond, with a savage 110/111.

Don't be discouraged. You likely won't get there on your first day out, but it'll come. There's lots of 1000yd shooters on here, and there's some 1500-2000 yd shooters here too. They're not some sort of superhuman.

This is true all around but not all rifles are accurate and not all shooters are willing to put in the effort and money to get out to those distances. Many people shoot the venerable 308Win accurately out t o 1000 yards. Much of that has to do with keeping the bullets being used up past supersonic velocities so they don't destabilize.

I'm not trying to discourage mh. He should know what he's getting into before he jumps in with both feet.

I've played the extended range game. I am in the middle of a build on a 6.5x55 with a 1-7.5 twist rate in a 30 in x 1.5 in fluted barrel. When I fitted the barrel to the receiver the first thing I did was attach the trigger and install the rifle into a solid mounted bench vice I can set up at the local range to see how it performed. It shot all ten rounds into one ragged hole under 1/2 moa. That is a good start. Hopefully it will maintain that accuracy as the distance progresses.

I won't say it's impossible to get an off the shelf Savage 110/111 that will maintain accuracy out to 1000 meters with a standard weight barrel but I would definitely not be expecting it.
