I aquired a .410 SxS and she shoots great. I really want to use this gun for Doves since I'm hunting them within 30yards. Does anyone know where I can order .410 Non-Toxic Shot but it has to be 2 1/2" or 2 3/4" . The only manufacturer that I know of that sells them is Winchester but after contacting them they were little help in finding a retailer who might carry them. Is there a website in Canada that we can order ammo from? Any help would be much appreciated!

Im thinking that might be near impossible to find, and when and if you do its crazy expensive, 12ga dove ammo is near impossible to find right now

Not finding them may be a blessing. Many of the old 410 sxs cannot safely handle the pressures of these steel shot loads nor are they chambered for 2 3/4" only 2 1/2"

bingo idk why the OP would want to use steel on doves anyway #7.5 lead 2 1/2" shells should do just fine. most .410's have fixed chokes and that's a steel shot no no

Doves are migratory birds and require non-tox shot, like waterfowl.... unless Ontario made an exception for 'upland' migratory birds? Some places do....

Also, from what I remember on a recent search, I think Federal also makes steel in .410

Crows migrate, don't require steel shot, pretty sure doves do not require steel shot. FS

"...Crows migrate, don't require steel shot..." Crows aren't covered in the Migratory Bird Act. No season for 'em either.

I think you mis read the law, its like a double negative kinda thing, saying no one can hunt doves, etc with toxic shot( ie. lead)

In Ontario we have to use Non-Toxic shots for Dove. It's the first season Ontario has allowed a Dove season for as long as I've been hunting (25+ years). The rule of Non-Toxic was the only setback to the new season and nobody can understand why they did it. I won't complain I'm happy to just have a Dove season.

My 410 SxS can shoot 2 3/4" the barrels are stamped 70 which is 70mm which equals to 2 3/4". The barrels are both Improved Cylinder so I don't see any reason why they could not handle non-toxic shots.

There is only one manufacturer that makes a non-toxic shot in a 2 3/4" and that's Winchester BUT nobody carries them anywhere. If I wanted 3" that would not be a problem but I can't shoot 3" out of that gun.

My only alternative is to start reloading non-toxic for my .410 but I'd have to buy all the equipment and really I only plan to use this gun for Doves and for the kids to shoot.

Reliable Gun out in Vancouver has been great and he said that he would look into ordering me a case. Probably won't happen until summer time but IF he can get them the shipping will probably be expensive.

Have you considered opening up your shells and exchanging the lead for steel?
Might be worth the effort if you can pick the ends open.

the problem is the shot cup in lead shells is too thin and can not be used with steel or you risk the hard steel pellets touching the barrel. the best point I have is if the gun was made pre steel days then don't shoot steel in it the barrels tend to be soft on old doubles too

hmm I know ive seen dove's in the small game section before not there now. I still don't see the point with non toxic shot the stuff is everywhere anyway I hunt the fields with lead shot and then when those fields flood guess where that shot is there's a reason I've never hunted birds other then pest birds too much BS and every single shotgun I have can't use steel

Paul have no idea what make the gun is but stamped 70mm gives me an idea and two things would be my concern. One not made to handle the operating pressures of 410 steel loads and two the 70 mm can mean 70mm are acceptable to shoot or the 70mm is the chamber length which is a 2 1/2 fired hull . Have seen them both ways pending the make, year etc so you really should measure it to be 100% sure it can handle a fired 2 3/4".
Cheers
