I just laid some money down on a Remington VTR in 22-250 but I'm already having second thoughts after reading some reviews. What are your thoughts on this gun and what would you choose otherwise. Savage wasn't on the list at this store.

The Weatherby Vanguard Varmint in 22-250 with the Schmidt & Bender a friend has that he let me shoot out of was pretty impressive. Very accurate! I wouldn't hesitate to buy one for bench shooting.
Myself I have a Tikka T3 Lite in .223 with a 4-12x Leupold and it's a great carry gun. Very accurate too!

I haven't heard good things about the VTR and that stupid triangular barrel, I would just go with an SPS light barrel, for a walk around 22-250. I have one in a 204, they're inexpensive and quite accurate and light.
I had a VTR in .308. After bedding it it was pretty accurate and more than competent as a hunting gun. I also bought a weatherby S2 vanguard. That gun was lighter, more accurate out of the box, and cheaper. Sold the VTR kept the S2.
IMHO the VTR's are a decent rifle but I think you can find better value for your money. The muzzle break and the triangle barrel add nothing to the gun other than looking different.

Bought a Vanguard S1 on sale almost a year ago and had a shoot off with a Tikka T3 same calibre (.243) and the vanguard spanked it. Every time, can easily do 1.5" at 200 yds.
Also got a chance to see/shoot one of those VTR with the stupid triangle barrel and it was horribly all over the place. Could have had better groups with a factory 10/22! This was in .308 but in it's defence it was brand new (using hand loads though).
I'm not a gun expert but I don't think the muzzle break does a damn thing. It doesn't reduce recoil at all and just shortens the barrel, maybe some weight reduction? As for the triangular barrel, all I can think of is weight reduction again. You're losing a lot of surface area for heat dissipation and that thing's gonna heat up quicker! I don't know, maybe I'm crazy.
EDIT: Forgot to mention the S1 has a Timney put in. Still cheaper than the other two though. I like that the VTR does feel sturdy though, when I hold a Tikka I feel like it's too light and sways more.

Out of your list, I would put the Remington dead last.
What he said! ....... There's not enough gophers and groundhogs here in NB to warrant a 22/250 heavy bbl and a 223 is a better round for range shooting. Most guys here use 22/250s for deer and/or coyote hunting, so again the HB is not needed.
Remington offers the 22/250 and 223 in SPS stainless. I'd look for one of those and update the stock down the road if needed.

They are overpriced and the quality is just not there.

On it I had a Leupold 6.5x20 Varmint Target Dot scope. It was a tack driver.
Since then their quality control has gone down, The last 3 new Rem's I bought all had problems. [SHOTGUNS].
I would buy another Savage with accutrigger, [AWSOME]. And I won't break the bank.
I has just acquired a Weatherby Vanguard in 223. [SCOPED PACKAGE].
I just love it. It shoots good it feels good, and I like the 24" barrel.
If you have a problem with a Remington gun, they have a hard timer to respond to you, [THEY DON'T CARE].

I don't know if I've ever seen a gopher here in NB. I already have a .222 and a .223 Heavy barrel so this gun is going to be my walking and throw it on the quad gun. I'm starting to favor the Tikka T3 light more. If needed I can also buy a McMillan stock for it down the road.
I like shooting centerfire .22's more than my bigger guns and so do my kids.
