i have been following this thread with interest, and sincerely am interested in hearing educated reports on these calibres.
yes I can tell you the difference in a hurry , a 45/70 has alot more power, more bullet choices, better loading capabilities and alot more recoil than a 444, now a 444 is a fine caliber for hunting in its own, with distance limitations as all bigger calibers have and the few bullet choices for the reloader , but I personaly have seen several bears, moose, and deer fall to a 240Grn Jhp bullet out to about a 175 yardishes give or take.
Does a animal notice the difference in a 45/70 or a 444 or a 450 ? probably not its 1 hell of a hole from each that leaves only a wound channel the panama cannal could compair to
On a side note I packed my marlin 444 for several years guiding for bears and moose in northern BC and never regreted it ! my only regrets now are I sold that marlin to my little brother nad he wont give it back
back to Salty , Yes I did sell the double 444 to a fellow in labradour(spelling?) I didnt have the time nor patience to fix the extracor system (look at the bright side I can say I OWNED a doubel now
