Need a bear gun...Marlin Lever?

M1978, you seem to be pretty deffensive about this topic, kinda funny considering you dont own either of these rifles. Just a while back you were asking to borrow a 45-70 cause you couldnt remember what the recoil was like, now you are talking about a birdgun loaded with a slug

Put a 45-70 with a 405g bullet next to a shotgun loaded with a slug and you can barely notice a diferance in recoil. I thought you were worried about recoil and didnt like the 45-70 because of that fact?

Most of the people talking in favour of the 45-70, or 450 are doing that for a reason, because they own them and shoot them allot.

I agree with Todd, stick with a 30-30 ;) ;) :D

Be nice now :D

oh, i can do better, but what's the point? enjoy compensating for your lack of manhood. :D

i'd say the subject's been covered to death and was just tired of arguing with fools, i can't compete with you fellas on that level. was just trying to have a rational discussion, but you can't seem to keep it that way.

200 yards, ok 444, much better trajectory. your logic was big lead up close. a 12 guage slug out of a rifled shotgun cannot reach past 75 yards? hmmm. i guess when i am able to hit a folgers coffee can with a 2 band enfield at 250 yards i must be working magic

...please explain the correlation between shooting a 12 gauge slug gun past 75 yards, and you hitting a coffee can at 250 yards with a .303 Brittish??

...you have lost me along with others here me thinks.:D

2 band enfield is a 58 calibre muzzleloading rifle, which in my case shot a 566 grain projectile to a distance of 250 yards easily with open sights. 58 calibre US Civil War era muzzleloader. trajectory of a rainbow, just like a 12 guage. most anyone who knows anything about firearms knows a 2 band enfield was a rifled musket.

is there really any point going on? i think all of the merits of the carts in question have been discussed. instead of this degrading into a pissing contest, can one of you gents please tell me, as a kind of summary, what the 45-70 will do better than the 444. logically i would like to hear it.

i have been following this thread with interest, and sincerely am interested in hearing educated reports on these calibres.

Need a bear gun.....buy a .338 win. mag. and be done with it. More power than you'll ever need, good factory ammo available everywhere and most importantly, nobody will be able to criticize your choice. :D

I don't think you'll be able to find one in a lever action though.;)

it will land with a bigger bullet, with more history

Sierra, Speer, Barnes, Hornady, Swift, etc, all make suitable bullets. The cast selection goes even further.

It wasnt made like the 444 was, by simply adding an inch more case to a 44 mag pistol round, to push 'small' big bore bullets "fast" (if you call a 444 fast! - hah)

8" drop @ 200y with 444/265 gr., zeroed at 100 yards

10.5" drop @ 200y with the 45/70 or 450 Marlin, zero @ 100y.

we're arguing over a drop difference a bit bigger than your ####? come on guys! :D

Nice work m1978, I was enjoying ever so slowly seeping some sence into the 458 on the brain boys and you have to go wigging off  No one's going to listen to you now fella. Unless maybe you have a nap and say you sowwy

All right, I'll have to do this myself. Yes, the 45-70 and 450 Marlin are great calibres. But the 444 is right there for all intensive purposes. This pistol bullet bulls**t is just that. I think I'm gonna buy me a tripple four and trounce lots of the hugest game with it to dispell all these myths. You 458 on the brain guys just won't believe any of this until someone reputable does it. And that's me damnit!!

I know, I know its not much but its all we got now :D

salty, what can i say? i can only take so much. add in a touch of the flu and you'd be cranky too. i look forward to hearing of your adventures:)

Dude, that is no excuse. Amphibious has had the dose more times than than a George street hooker and todbartell is battling gout but you don't see them getting all hissy. Now go have you nap :)

Back to the topic at hand. Bears and lever guns. Sort of like politics and drunken binges, they go hand in hand. Maybe I should get a 444 double rifle like Bonecollector used to have

wow, great thread! i'm gonna have to agree with m1978 guys. i own a 45-70, and a buddy of mine has a 444, and it does kick significantly less. seen both in action and can't notice much of a difference.
