Need a hunting rifle

Dear sir:

You already own one of the most reliable rifles ever built, with a track record on damn near anything on the planet, preponderance perhaps to homo sapiens for which it was designed, but really capable of killing anything that you will hunt in Labrador.

"MOST" semis are less reliable than "MOST" bolt guns, not to mention "MOST" levers and pumps and single shots, and.....

If you really feel the need to modernize (and I do not disagree with you on that), I respectfully submit that the best advice you have received here was that from Supercub. I say that having owned many hundreds of rifles.

Good luck in your choice,

Doug

The short tracs are awesome rifles... the Benelli R1 is even better.
I have shot both of them and the Benelli is extremely accurate and user friendly... I would buy one in a heartbeat for harsh conditions.

Or how about the Win Super X?

One of the above would be the way to go if you want "modern". Unless you handload, go with a 30-06 or whatever you can readily get ammo for. Since you're comfortable with the .303 British you would likely do well with a .308, too.

In my hunting days I have seen basically two type of hunters. The first group are the type of hunters that put all the emphasis on the first shot and don't expect to have to use a second shot. The second group of hunters that I have come across are those that believe that a second shot might be needed and for those, a semi is the ideal firearm.

Belonging to either of these two groups is not related to how good of a hunter you are and neither how good of a shooter you might be. I have seen professional hunters using semis and very amateur type using a bolt actions. Personally, I rely on the first shot and for that reason, I use a bolt action gun. A bolt action will be the most reliable and accurate rifle of all the selections.

My type of hunting has recently changed and I have just acquired a slide action for a very specific type of hunting. I don't believe that I would ever rely on a semi for serious hunting because of reliability and the very marginal speed advantage in repeated shots as compared to slide or even bolt actions.

Well said Duke... But I have seen many experienced hunters short stroke a Bolt or Pump more often than I have seen a Semi-Auto Jam for no reason! Human error still reigns supreme in Murphys world and a semi eliminates much human malfunction... let there be no doubt. What does the military use... it isn't bolt guns.
Most often it is just a personal preferrence that determines our choice... But many times a semi is the best choice for certain types of hunting and certain types of hunters!
JWK asked a specific question and for the most part got the answers he asked for... except those typical peanut gallery responses from the usual suspects who feel it necessary to chide anyone who does not shoot what they shoot.:p
I am lucky to be able to see and shoot most new rifles as they hit the market and the Benelli R-1 is the cream of the crop so far. The gas action is as well engineered as the Benelli Shotguns and the Chryo treated barrels give better accuracy than most factory bolt action rifles.
I am still waiting for my first kick at a Klingon forehead... they look promising.:)

I must admit, when I scanned through this thread, I expected the usual "attack of the bolt gunners" type responses.
There are a few, but things seem to have moderated. Maybe you guys are finding out that other actions do work, that bolt guns are not the end all and be all of the rifle world.
Sure, there are POS examples, like the 7400. But, there are also, inexpensive little gems like the 7600, and the '94 Winchester. Lever action bolt guns like the BLR and the 88 Winchester. And stuff that just plain works like the 99 Savage. The Benelli R1 is a fascinating example of a semi that works. I'd love to try one, even if I generally don't care for semi's.
Go try them, you might get a big surprise, and you might have to get a bigger gun safe.

I doubt if things have moderated all that much J/C... we are hunters and shooters and by nature we are opinionated... not team players so to speak.
I think debate is healthy, if that is the intent of the thread.
When a specific question is asked we should all try to answer it without prejudice.... I may be serious....
