need a new rifle with s.africa in mind

I would go with the 375 H&H in a double rifle, I prefer a O/U to a SxS. put a quality scope on it with some quick release claw mounts and you are set.

with any luck you may be able to sell it over there at a profit and pay off some of the trip.

You guys are ruining it here for the OP...............He needs to buy a 300 WM/WBY/H&H/RUM for this trip AND then when he goes back he will NEED to buy a 375 H&H for that trip...........Don't you guys get anything.........2 trips, 2 new rifles JJJEEEEZZZZEEEE..........

Or, take both a 300 and a .375 on the first trip, that's what I did. The second trip is a sure thing anyway, he just doesn't know it yet.

Due to the nature of my plains game hunt, there was no real need to take a .375 but I did just because it was Africa and I wanted to at least take a .375 in case I never made it back. I sort of was of the mind that if I had a 300 I didn't need a three seven five and that it was just a little indulgence. What surprised me was that under the bushveld conditions I quickly found that since I had a 375 I didn't need the 300, indeed left it in the case after checking the sight-in.

Part of it may have been a "if it's not broken, don't fix it " mentality on the part of the PH. He wasn't about to hear any talk of changing after the first day. That's how I accidently became a 375 for everything guy for awhile.

A "pro" chimes in...

Do you know what a "pro" brings on his umpteenth trip, Douglas???

... wait for it....

A Merkel SXS in .375 H&H...

;)

I think I may have got a handle on this
M70 safari in .375h&h and one of my .308's
Or zastava in .375h&h and pick up a .300win mag
Or the m70 and my bow since I am primarily a bow hunter
Choices choices,if I buy the m70 and decide to step it up too a 416 rigby on a future trip itll hold a better resale value in case I need to sell.

Consider the M70 Alaskan as well. Its about 2 pounds lighter than the Safari, no matter what the specs say. Lighter barrel and hollowed out stock take care of that. Still wood and walnut, and enough retro look for the nostalgic.

Just when I thought I had it figured, that alaskan look nicer, lighter and a touch cheaper I may have to reconsider this.

That's it, right there!

This needs to be made into a bumper sticker or a commemorative plate or a tattoo, or something...:)

I vote that you get the tattoo... pics when it is done please... maybe start a poll on the tattoo's location...

Wish I had bought one years ago when I had the chance to affordably .. I even found 4 boxes of .450nitro express ammo for 120$ 5 years ago.

You definitely need a new rifle, for the experience. However, the very sad fact is that your .308 will do nicely for everything you listed. On the one hunt to the Eastern Cape of SA that I did, my brother and I shot 16 animals with a 30-06 and 165gr. tsx. The only one I felt a little under gunned for was my eland, but my bother's eland succumbed to one well placed ( better placed ) shot. Everything else was a one shot kill, or two shots with the second not needed. Eland, Kudu, Gemsbok, Zebra, Black Wildebeest, and a bunch of smaller stuff. Our PH did all his meat animals culling with that 30-06. His father used a .270, even on Eland. they had a .416 Remington for dangerous game, but seldom used it. If you bring two rifles, your .308 for one and a 9.3x62, or .375H & H, or .338 Win Mag would be a nice 2 rifle combo.

Watch that musgrave .308 ammo its way way to hot I had it swell so tight I couldn't open the bolt on my rifle. Have four boxes of that stuff it's useless.

I'd suggest a nice old skool Sako L61r in .375 H&H such as this one...

And perhaps a .416 rigby as a backup such as this one...

Barring that a nicely worked over Zastava in 9.3xLOTS should suffice with a .30cal backup rifle.

How does your wife handle recoil? I believe the OP stated that his wife would be shooting the same rifle as well? That may present a problem. For that matter, the OP doesn't say he's shot anything larger than the .308's he owns either - the increased recoil of either a 300 mag or a 375 may be a problem. A .308 would handle any of the animals listed - if it were me, I'd take a 308 along for the wife, and buy a 375 H&H.
