Need advice- .308/300WM/7mm ?

I'd use a 165gr or 168gr TSX bullet..No need for the 180's in your 308...:D

Heck i use the 168gr TSX in my 300WSM...I woud not feel undergunned hunting anyting in BC, incuding grizzlies, with that load.:)

Now the question is, what's your recommendation for a 180g factory load?
I used the 180 Nosler Partitions in my 308 win Tikka for a spell......
They performed Awesome on a few Deer and I wouldn't hesitate to Drop a Moose with them either;)

Federal has a 180 partition load.
They also have a 165 TSX loading which I'd be real tempted to try as well in the 308.
P308G 308 Win. 180 /Nosler Partition

P308H 308 Win. 165 /Barnes Triple Shock X-Bullet

Either of These loads would do the Trick without Question:cool:

Federal's High Energy load jacks up the 308 to slightly hotter than the 30-06. My son has used the 180 grn N/P rendition for moose, elk and black bear. If it weren't for grizzly, and we saw 6 on our last trip, there would be no reason for anything bigger. Stay away from most of the boat tail bullets as they tend to come apart. If you hit a moose in the shoulder bones with a game king B/T then you will see a moose walk away, with a mess where the meat used to be.

oh hell I have one of each

308 - Win Mod 70 Heavy barrel
7mmRM - Ruger M77 (tang safety)
300WM - Savage 111 (my newest toy)

Problem is not with all the choice I can't decide which to take hunting :)

if using factory ammo, the best would be 180 NP High Energy from Federal.

If reloading, Scirrocco, interbond, TSX, NP - all in 165 gr are those I know work

I am partial to a 300 mag. I think the 300 Mag gives you more room for those difficult shots than a 308. With a well constructed bullet (TSX, Grand Slam, Partition, Trophe Bonded) in the 180 grain weight, you don't have to ponder too much about taking a moose at 350 yds (as long as you can get it out! My buddy cussed me out on the last moose - he, he! :D).

With a 308 Win, I'd hesitate at those ranges. Either way, you need to know your gun, know how it shoots, and be able to handle magnum recoil and shoot it well. Mind you, I've taken 2 moose with my now-traded 308 but that was at 60 and 75 yds resepctively with a 165 grn conventional bullet. There be Griz in some parts N of PG. A mag eases the pucker factor just a wee bit!

One of this group of guys had his leg chewed on by a grizz a few years back ... he was sitting on a stump calling moose at the edge of a cut block, and what he got was a grizz out of nowhere. His father-in-law was not far away, lucky for him. It's a long story, but he was choppered out, and the others in the group got the grizz and her two cubs later on, with the C/O's help.
I think that's the main reason these guys all shoot bigger cals than 308 or 30-06 now. He still goes up there every year for his moose!

For me, like I said, I'll be on a quad most of the time, so I can pack a 12g along for a little insurance if I think I need some.

....get the 35 Whelen and you can leave the shotgun in camp for the cook to get some grouse for supper......;) ..

We're talking animals here people, not tanks! A .308 is in the same class as my 30-06 I guess and I wouldn't second guess either's ability to take a moose out.
Since a .308 and a 30-06 are similar...can anybody really argue a 30-06 is underpowered for moose? i mean come on.

SHoot a grizz int he head with a 308, and he is going to fall down...:p
Yah, he will. In the excitement of the moment, a head shot might not be possible as one is likely to aim for the centre of mass, which may not be the head! In that case, for me, I want a LOT of newtons on target! 'Cause I want to do this :dancingbanana: , not this :runaway:.

Well with Grizzlies in the mix I would be taking a .338... I have seen Moose killed with most of the calibers mentioned above no problem.
If you want to anchor them with one shot I believe .338 or bigger is more likely to knock them over. The .35 Whelen is Moose/Grizzly medicine for sure.
I am not arguing with bullet choice or bullet selection in any way as this is without a doubt solid logic that will get you your Moose with most any .30 caliber... but when Grizzlies are using your leg for a chew bone.... well that is a horse of a different color.:runaway:

I would go with the big guns. With Grizz in the mix I'd like to know that the gun in hand will do the job:D .

If you get off the quad to check an area you will take the rifle and the 12ga will be out of reach. The time it takes to change guns could cost you big. One gun for both uses (Moose and life preserver).

I killed my first moose with a 308 and it went maybe 2 feet before dropping. If recoil bothers you to the point that 2 shots will affect your accuracy stay with the 308 rather than go to a magnum. If your worried about bears then upgrade to one of the premium bullets that will hold together at close up range and punch through bone.

If you can handle the recoil for a couple shots then go with a magnum just for the extra energy at 300 yards for that farther shot on a big animal.

I was out last weekend trying to fill my tag sitting by a trail and 3 mule deer does ran by, looked at me then kept going.About 90 seconds later out comes a grizzly, looks at me about 30 feet away then continues after the deer. With all the oilfield activity here in the last 2 years there is going to be more contact between bears and people and i expect they will become more wary of us or get thinned out as there seems to be more of them around in the last 10 years.Grizzlies have either looked at me like i don't matter or have run off but i have had 2 black bears come at me instead.Sorry no pictures, kept the rifle ready and the safety off,I'm not ready to be a darwin candidate just to get a photo. :)

We have nbeen having a steady increase of big cats and Grizzlies up here in the last ten years.
That doesn't mean I'm going to run out and buy a magnum, just because I may be hunting in grizzly country.
I hunted thhe Nordegg and country for a few years also, and was comfortable carrying what I owned , even with seeing Grizzlies there.
I'll not be buying something "just in case".
That's like using a repeater "just in case".
And , no, I am NOT an inexperienced greenhorn who has never been in close proximity to aggresive blacks or grizzlies.
