I have a Cooey Model 60

It has taught two generations of my family to shoot and Everybody hates it,
of the firearms dad has past to me ( given while still alive of course cause he get to shoot when he visits) he said that one I could "give away or destroy"

well I am a sucker for an ugly duckling and I figured I would make this a project if successful i can pass on to another generation and if not its a 60 dollar rifle

my first range with it was sloppy and after i looked i knew why
the barrel was floating ........not a bad thing for rifles but for a "60" and the archaic way it loads and feeds (but it works flawlessly and i its really neet to see working) it prevents a solid weld from the action to the stock .......so it seems to me a pretty sloppy set up, my solution was to glue shims to the stock to thus better support the action and the barrel if it didn't work I could always sand down and start over

results.....it worked !!!!!!

the rifle will now put 5 shots into a nickel at 50m I am happy with that
I am curious what would happen at 100m with a good scope though.
now for the final problem the sights ......... the sights are offset........they are straight as a pair but are off set a bit to the right, I want to put half decent scope on it the question is would this be sacralidge ? I don't think so and if i do make it a "scope only rifle" wich wouldn't bother me or bother playing with the sights?

i have a cooey 30 single...long barrel and a scope mounted. I for fun compete with a friend and my son with his Stevens .22. The old girl is a lot of fun...sure it takes time to reload each shot but you get used to that. I shoot at targets at about 100 yards and loonies cover the holes. Keep the gun, have a smith scope it with a 3x9x and enjoy.

The cooey 75 I have ...I had drilled and tapped on top of the barrel just back of the rear sight slot. then a 3x-9x scope (cost $50. at SIR)... Drill and tap cost me $15. a hole x 3 holes... I have never seen a side mount either for this gun...for winnies..yes.

I've got the model 60 that was the first gun my grandfather ever bought new, I think he said he was 12 years old. He gave it to me on my 8th birthday (the year before my parents bought me my first pellet gun) I don't think I'd modify it just for sentimental reasons, but it still shoots well, so it's not an issue.

I've got a model 600, the 'upscale' version of the 60 with the longer stock with the rabbit carved into the grip. It's drilled and tapped on the side, but I haven't bothered with a scope yet.

I wish it had better irons though. The rear sight set-up is too flimsy.

Here it is with my Lee-Enfield:

I've got a cooey 600 with the flat fore-end, a side-mount and some 4x scope. It's definately a shooter but the long barrel makes it a little cumbersome to shoot offhand for more than a hundred or so rounds.
Does anyone know if these stocks were oiled or varnished originally? Mine is oiled.
Cheers,
Grant

P.S. talked with my gunsmith today, he says he's got a few of those side-mounts kicking around if anyone wants one.

Seems like everybody got started by shooting the cooey, Mine is the 600, unscoped, passed down from my father. Taken many a grouse with that gun but now it's in the vault until I have my own little brats to introduce it to!!!

They were originally varnished....

Mine is definately an original stock but it's got a different fore-end contour to the one above. Very square are the nose. I'll have to drag out the camera tomorrow and get a pic on this thread. It's the only Cooey of it's shape I've ever seen.

the model 60 is a great gun. i *think* (lol) it was the first gun i ever shot. My grandpa has one, and honest to god, it must have seen a million rounds, and its never been cleaned, but its still shoots great, and he's had it forever. Last summer i hit 3 soccer ball targets with it from 440 yards (straight across a 1/4 mile long field) with it. holdover was about 12' but still. When my PAL comes thru, i want to pick one up mostly for sentimental reasons. :)

the cooey's are all great guns , without them where would we all have started shooting. sir prices the weaver side base #2 at $13.39 and the ring assembly to fit at $27.99. most if not all cooey mod. 60's are already drilled and tapped and yes by the time you buy the scope it is more costly than the price of the gun, but why not? if it has any sentimental value , and i think most of them do, then keep it shooting
