Hey folks. I'm looking at going for my "black badge" in the spring and starting to compete in the IPSC Production Division. Just wondering what other people are using for pistols? I've narrowed down my choices between a Glock 21 Gen 4, CZ75, Taurus 1911 & Jerico 941. Still trying to decide as they all have pros/cons. I've shot each and would like them all. Lol. But I am open to other suggestions, preferably from people who compete in the division. Thanks.

hi all are good choices, mine is the CZ Shadow it can be custom tuned very easily i.e. recoil springs, extended firing pin spring, & hammer return spring, i have been using mine in the production class for over 3 years now, and have had no complaints everything with the CZ is practically all done with springs, and a little bit of polishing....good luck on your decision....Geordie

If those four choices I would go with Glock. A couple of other suggestions:

CZ Shadow or Shadowline
Tanfoglio Stock II or III
Glock 17

I would not suggest getting a Glock in .45 caliber. It's way too expensive, brass is too hard to come by and it recoils too much to ever be competitive.
For Production Division, just get whatever pistol you choose in 9mm. It's a LOT cheaper to shoot and much less recoil to deal with.

Just about everyone is using 9mm. To be super competitive you have to. If you hand load, you can load .40 down to a pf of 130 or so and do alright, the recoil is pretty soft at that point. I shot my Glock 22 for the first couple years and did fine but when I bought a Shadow, I jumped ahead. I can shoot it faster and more accurately.

Forget Production Division. Get the Taurus 1911 and play in Classic Division!

For a beginner you are going to learn faster with a heavier gun with nice trigger than a light gun with a not-so-good trigger. CZ SP01 have great triggers and are on the heavier side while all Glock's are light with less than desirable triggers. Look for a used CZ to start is my recommendation. You may want to check the Exchange for a used CZ SP01.

I would like to get in on this discussion. I'm in the same boat; I am registered for a Black Badge course in Sudbury in the Spring. I have been shooting a H&K USP .45 for *years*, and have shot lots of other things.

I am thinking of running an M&P CORE 9mm in 5" barrel. For Production. I'm not going to mount a sight right away, but I will have the option in the future for other divisions if I stick with it.

Do you see many M&P 9's at IPSC matches?

Thanks.

A few.

The CZ75 SP01 Shadow (and variants) seems to be the most popular choice. I've seen entire squads run Shadows...

Glock 17 seems to me to be the next most popular choice after the Shadow.

In 3rd place I'd say an even split between the GP6, M&P9, and Tanfoglio Stock II/III pistols.

4th place would be Sig P226.

These comments are high-level, qualitative, based on no scientific data and are in no way reflective of actual statistical usage of pistol type in IPSC PD.

If you are buying a gun specifically for IPSC production division, get the CZ 75 SP01 Shadow. You can certainly come play with other guns, but if you really want to compete thats the one you should be looking for. The tanfoglio's are nice too (same design basically) but are more $$ and often require more work to get the trigger as nice as the Shadow's.

Best bang for your buck (pardon the pun) is the CZ75 SP-01 shadow. Easy to tune, parts availability is excellent, aftermarket parts like thinner front posts and narrower grips are easily found and Production legal, and on top of all that very reasonably priced.

If you don't go with the CZ, at least stick with 9mm.... Less recoil, and much cheaper to shoot.

Best of luck!

Top 8 at the IPSC 2013 nationals was evenly divided between CZ Shadows and Tanfoglio Stock IIs - 4 each.
No plastic fantastics in there.

Go SP01 Shadow, if you are new to shooting. After year you'll have better understanding do you want to continue or not and what toy do you want now.

Most of us are waiting for Shadows to arrive, if you can't get a shadow ( for the time being) Glocks are convenient and have a lot of gear available for competitive shooting. Easy to take care of and mags aren't going to break the bank like full metal mags. The trigger is NOT competitive but will train a smooth pull for accuracy's sake or just aim high and right for A's. Have fun and bring candy for the RO's.

I just took my Black Badge course a couple months ago...I used my M&P40...It shot well but I learned the hard way that Its mags don't like concrete floors....The plastic bases broke on 2 of my 5 mags....All the instructors were using CZ SP01 Shadows and after holding one of theirs(It felt great in my hands)...I have since bought a SP01 Shadowline and full metal Tanfoglio mags....Looking forward to competing with it this year.....
