Need advice on red-dot sight.

Hi,

I'd like to get a red-dot sight for my CZ SP-01 Shadow. Any suggestions of which one to get, and where would be the best place to buy it?

That's a good question Rob,

I own a Shadow myself, and haven't seen one yet. In order to mount something on top, there has to be a saddle that bolts onto the lower and provides a stable base to the Red-Dot, without interfering with the slide. Sort of like this:

... but these pistols are designed for it... I'm not seeing many attachment points for the CZ, unless someone makes a mount that slides onto the Weaver Rails from the front, and the red dot gets mounted in the front half of the pistol.

I use the CZ for Production Class IPSC, and we cannot use these sorts of embellishments, but interesting idea for plinking. You should find the CZ sights are pretty good, and with practice you'll lock on the targets pretty quickly without electronics.

I had been thinking of using it to go open. I realize that I'd be completely outclassed by the 1911s and 2011s in that division, but my first concern is learning the game. More fancy guns, and perhaps higher scores can come later!

I have an issue with presbyopia (I require reading glasses) and I'm thinking the red-dot might be better for me. Of course, I'm asking for folks' opinions, so my mind is open.

Check out the C-more then, Josko might have one at Double Tap you just need a mount and get the frame drilled and tapped look here:HTT P://CZCUSTOM.COM/

That's fine for the Kadet or Kadet kit where the red dot is fixed to the non moving part as shown in that picture. But on a Shadow the red dot mounted that way would have to kick back and forth. The added weight would affect the cycling and likely make it jam a lot.

I like the idea of a picatinny rail mounted adapter. That way the gun stays as stock as practical.

Yeah...I don't think so.

This type of mount works very well. In fact several companies make mounts that fit directly into the dovetail to mount the red dot on.

Advantage is the low mount is much closer to the bore and a more natural sight line.

I plan on using this type of mount myself on the Super Duper Open Racing Really Fast Glock I am putting together.

Sure but I believe you have to drill a couple of holes in your gun to mount it.

I am looking at that model as well as the STS and the FastFire. I like the looks of the Optima as well but I think they are out of production.

Where I shoot there a couple of guys who shoot this type of sight and they really like it. Natural sighting plane and they say they don't really notice the sight moving back and forth.

Worth a try in my book.

I have a Docter site on my Open gun, that was bullet proofed and mounted by Bevan Gram...by far the most expensive option for a slide mounted site...but also the most reliable.

I really like it...and his mounting system (mount is cut into the slide) actually reduces the overall weight.
 
Since the Shadow has a rail under the barrel, is there a sight that I could use that isn't slide mounted?

It also occurs to me that I might need to consider a compensator as well...

You are going down a bit of a tough road if you want to build a real Open Shadow with optics, comp etc.

It has been done but it is by no means as easy as building a race gun on some other platforms. If you really want to try it go to the CZ Forum and do some poking around.

I had the same thought of converting one of my Shadows but after a little investigation I realized it would be too hard to put together the needed hardware etc and could end up being cost prohibitive.

So I am going to build a Plastic Fantastic Super Duper Race-a-matic Open Glock. It may not be a SVI or a STI but I can afford it and I am easy to please :)

I spent a lot of time lurking around GlockTalk and some other forums and it seems the G17 offers certain advantages to building a plastic go-fast-omatic...not the least of which is low sticker shock. I just bought one from Gunnar for $650+

Trigger/action work looks pretty simple - and relatively cheap.

I picked up a barrel and comp off the EE and now I am looking at optics.

Seriously considering the C-More STS with a dovetail mount.

The key for me is to be able to do as much of the work as I can or buy 'drop-in' parts to help keep the cost down. The hard part is trying to be frugal but still keep quality in mind.

I am not worried about being the next world champ I just want to have fun.... :)

G17 in open? Very interesting. Definitely have an advantage with the Glock: you don't have to do your first shot double action! I assume you're going to load 9mm major.

My previous gun was a G22, but I wasn't a fan of the .40 S&W. For sure I'm going to have to give this a good hard think before drilling and tapping my CZ.
