Need advice to give advice

I agree that the Savage Precision Carbine would be the route to go only because it offers you a lot of what it sounds like your son wants and for a small price point. It would be easy down the road to upgrade the barrel too. Make sure you get it bedded. Hand-loading is also a good idea if you want any resemblance of accuracy. What is cool about that rifle is the 308 model has a 1:10 twist so you could easily shoot the really heavy high BC bullets.

No Remmy hate. I shoot both and enjoy them both equally.

There are the 155 Palma bullets that deliversimilar BC to the 175s, but with far better velocity, and the 190s and 200s are really slow in a 308. There is also the point to be made that the faster twist does slow down the bullet a bit.
