Hey there, I know it's been asked before and I searched, but I didn't find people discussing how to keep this project cheap if you don't have tools or experience for DIY.

I'm really liking the idea of having a just over 26" 10/22 with a fixed stock and I want to do it as cheap as possible. I'm good with whatever barrel so long as it doesn't add a LOT of weight. Only accessories I'd add are scope, sling and maybe a light at the front. I would be using the rifle in the bush when useful and legal, at the range for fun, and for hunting. I prefer a wood stock but synthetic is fine if it's cheaper.

I'm thinking something like the short ones from these posts:

Your cheapest option for a shorter barrel 10/22 is find one to buy that has a stock you like. Then swap the barrel with a Dlask short barrel. Keep in mind that Dlask has options down to 8.5 inches long. In many cases this will be shorter than the forward portion of the stock. You don't want to get into that as it's too easy to wrap a finger or two around and in front of the muzzle. The 8.5" barrel is for use with specific after market stocks.

Typically you're going to be best off to buy the rifle with one of the factory stocks if one of those is a style you like. But if you're lusting after a particular aftermarket stock then you have two options. A) Buy the most basic 10/22 going and just set the old stock out in the firewood pile. Or B) buy a used rifle with a nice stock but not the one you want. Then sell the nice stock on the EE to recover some of your expenses.

Then buy a Dlask or other after market barrel that fits the stock you go for.

The nice thing with a 10/22 is that it's not hard at all to swap the barrel. Search on You Tube to find dozens of videos on how to swap a 10/22 barrel.

Which do you care about more the length or the weight.
Reason why I ask is yhe dlask barrel shoots great but its as heavy as a bat! Plus a 8" barrel is crazy loud as in youll need plugs atleast.
A light option is what I have, axiom stock, ch22 receiver but any 10/22 receiver will do. I just like the AR charging handle, and then add a tactical solutions barrel which is 16" so total length is just over $30
Total weight 3.75lbs loaded with a trs-25 red dot.
I had the dlask barrel with the axiom stock and it was 21-22" So Id have to pin the stock to make it NR.
So there are a few options for you.

Thanks for the replies.

I don't have my eye on any aftermarket stock, I think I'd ideally keep the wood stock and if necessary get it cut by someone, I like the look of the short wood rifles.

I care more about length, but I'd spend a bit more if necessary to keep the weight balanced.
