I’d go 2-7 with whatever largest objective lens is available. Leave it parked in 2x for his uses.

It's a foggy piece of crap from ancient history. It's a lever-safety Savage 99 and I suspect the scope is original to the gun, and on flip-aside mounts.

Youve uncovered the King of Fudds. The Fudd King. Buy something for around $100 and dont put anymore thought into it, because its just going to go to waste.

Get him a laser sight. Great in low light. All us Fudds have them now.

Dang tootin' fer sure. Green laser works best fer most folks.

Hook him up with an older bushnell banner or scopechief around 1.5 or up to 3 power max. You can still find them for relatively decent prices, and if he hurts it, the loss won't be worth cryin' about. I wouldn't recommend a dot sight, as (this is from experience) you often can't get the brightness dim enough to see the target if you're much past dusk.
